Re: fire
Have just seen on local TV fire at 5 fingers in the Alevkaya area. Helicopters being sent from Turkey, because of the location difficult for fire appliances to access. Seems to be out of control at the moment, but my Turkish not wonderful and might have lost something in the translation.
Alevkaya is a popular picnic area. Hope the Herbarium at Alevkaya is ok.

Re: fire
Here are a few reports on the big fire north of Değirmenlik :
http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/basbakan ... 41575.html
The Minister of Finance, Ersin Tatar, currently acting also as the Minister of Agriculture, told reporters that they hope to have the fire under control before evening.
He also said they are investigating claims that the fire was started when explosives were used for mining in that area. Tatar said though that such explosions were prohibited at this time of year.
Tatar went on to say that they asked and received helicopter help from both Turkey and the British bases.
Both Tatar and Prime Minister Irsen Küçük stressed the need to buy the necessary helicopters as soon as possible.

The Minister of Energy, Sunat Akun, told reporters there is no danger to the Teknecik Power Station.
The Minister of the Interior, Nazım çavuşoğlu, said that they are hoping to prevent the fire spreading north over the mountains ... as what happened in 1995.
Both ministers also stated the need for our own helicopters.

Hi Marion,
Re : "100 donums damaged is a lot" - According to http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/kriz-mas ... 41590.html Ersin Tatar told reporters that 1000 dönüms have been burned
By the way Marion, as a moderator, can you close the thread I started on the fires today. No point in having two. Thanks in advance.

Reports of many fires today in KKTC
http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/degirmen ... 41572.html
According to the above, as of 2.45pm on Sunday there are reports of four fires in KKTC that warranted the need for the fire brigade:
In Değirmenlik, the fire that stated at 12:45 has spread so much that they have requested and are expecting a fire extinguishing aeroplane and helicopter from Turkey.
A smaller fire broke out in Mormenekşe at around 12:00, but was extinguished by 13:00. Approximately 1 dönüm of land was burned.
In Alayköy, a fire that started at 11:00 has burned 6 dönüms and 350 hay bales ... and as of 14:45 is continuing to burn ...
In Aslanköy, the fire brigade are battling to prevent a fire that started at the side of the road from reaching a stable.
Clearly the high temperatures – yesterday according to http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/lefkosa- ... 41537.html it reached 47 degrees in Lefkoşa - are making the grass tinder-dry.
Hopefully our smoker friends will be even more careful when discarding their cigarettes these days.

I hope the fire brigade can deal with all these fires. They couldn't in 1995 it was so bad. 4 planes, the Army and volunteers were needed then. Lets hope they get the fires under control.

Re: Reports of many fires today in KKTC
Clearly the biggest of these fires was north of Değirmenlik, where 1000 dönüms have been burned and has led to a crisis meeting of ministers. I suggest for further information you refer to this parallel Kibkom thread :

So, seeing as started this thread I ask Soner or one of the moderators to close it.
However, I would like to apologise to smoker friends. In my opening post on this thread I wrote "Hopefully our smoker friends will be even more careful when discarding their cigarettes these days." As was pointed out on another forum that would imply carelessly discarded fag ends are the primary cause of such fires. That is not the case ... and furthermore I'm sure that smokers on this forum are pillars of the community

Re: fire
Thanks for that Marion
This report appeared on kktchaber at 7.42 pm this evening.
http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/degirmen ... 41587.html
President Derviş Eroğlu has also commented on the fires this weekend. He told reporters that today three major fires broke out in different locations. He said that what with yesterday's fires as well there is some serious talking to be done.
With regards to the big Değirmenlik fire he said that with three helicopters they were now about to extinguish it.
He said that the meclis had previously discussed the need for helicopters, but had decided that they could be brought from Antalya if necessary. However, what with major fires also in Antalya today, they now realised the need for TRNC to have their own helicopters.
He also said that in this heat, companies using explosives for mining should take more precautions and that drivers and passengers should be more careful when discarding their cigarette ends.
He went on to thank the fire brigade, the army and members of the public for helping to prevent the Değirmenlik fire from spreading north of the mountain and thus avoiding a far bigger disaster.

Re: fire
this is fortunately good news this time. I purchased a Japanese import car from Tiga. They eveidently do not allow smoking in cars in Japan. I ordered an ash try for it but I bought a small one which clips on the air vents. It was very cheap and in view of the dangers I would hope that every thoughtful person would make sure that no burning fag buts are thrown out of the window of your car It is just so dangerous
As I got older I congratulated myself on my tolerance..... Now I realise I just don't give a "ooops"

Re: fire
Hi Mickhm,
The most likely cause of the big Değirmenlik fire was the explosives used by the mining companies in that area. But yes, it is quite likely that at least one of the other smaller fires was started because of a carelessly discarded cigarette end.

Mickhm,
I too have had 2 cars from Tiga, neither with ashtrays.
Bought an ashtray with a lid from Mr Pound which fits in to the drink holder between the front seats...would hate to be the cause of a fire here.

Re: fire
Today, the acting Minister of Agriculture, Ersin Tatar, announced that explosives used for quarrying was definitely not the cause of yesterday's big Değirmenlik fire.
