ROC and the Russian Navy

Despite his denials last week Anastasiades yesterday signed an agreement for Russian naval vessels to use Cyprus ports and also holds out the possibility for their aircraft to use Cyprus runways. I can't see that this will endear Cyprus to the EU which has already invoked sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine mess, nor to Turkey.

My understanding is that this merely extends the use of facilities that already exist and also provide for naval ships to use Cyprus in the event that they are dealing with terror or rescue missions.

He's now threatened to cut off the gas to Europe. Maybe only RoC will have heating next year.

Perhaps he has promised lots of Russian coal to keep the TRNC log burners going.

Just been reported on BBC that Russia supplies a third of EU gas, via Ukraine. Talks on Monday with EU about supply of gas to Ukraine. Could maybe be cut off if more sanctions are placed on Russia, which the EU are making noises about.
