Poor air quality?

Had a bad asthma attack today and ended up in a & e. They were very good and put me right thank heavens. Just think that it may have been caused by what appeared to be some kind of smog today. Just to say anyone with breathing difficulties needs to be very cautious at the moment I think. At least I am confident now though that I can get the right treatment at Girne a & e.

Dipkarpaz Belediye warned of dust winds for yesterday, today and maybe tomorrow - I suppose what they used to call 'coptic winds' !

Sorry mrsgee to hear you have had a asthma attack today, we drove to the karpass from Girne today on our return we came over the mountains from Famagusta, dropping down I commented about the fog laying over the Northern coast, The good lady informed me that we have had gale force winds for the last few days and this is the sand from North Africa. It was about 16 yrs ago we had this sand and it was a total fog bank in Lefcosia at Midday. If you suffer from any types of respiratory conditions stay inside.

Thank you Johnny lee and karmels. I am getting over it now, but at first could not work out what had caused it. It started yesterday morning so I started my own treatment which I am used to doing. Always have my nebuliser. Wasn't working and couldn't understand why then hubby noticed the heavy smog rolling in. So down the hospital and got treated. Very quick professional, and out again after a couple of hours. Being an asthma sufferer and having experienced near death ( not this time thankfully) I really want to stress as karmels says, anyone with breathing difficulties needs to be alert to any situation such as this and get straight to a and e. I got all the care and treatments, blood tests, chest X-ray, drips, and results to take to my doctor all for the registration fee of 10 lira. I am sure I should have paid something more but was not in a state to debate. Will go back later to query if I should pay.

If I read of another warning, I will post it here straight away. Sorry, mrsgee, didn't think to do it as mostly we do not have the same weather here in the Karpaz. I remember having it a few years ago, 4?, as all the trees had a layer of ocher dust on them

Thanks Dippersgirl, it would be useful to know to expect it when these things happen. There was nothing on the weather forecast, nor in the paper. I suspect there would be quite a few suffering yesterday.

dippersgirl.
The coptic winds come from the coptic calender which was produced by the coptic who now live in Egypt, this calender is over a thousand years old.
The winds are broken down into different types the stronger ones which last nearly a week are called a fertina.
You can download this from the internet as we have, we used it when we were sailing to and around Turkey but you must allow aprox 5 days either side of their predictions.
The red dust which we have had comes from the North African deserts, this happens every year some are a lot worse than others. As I mentioned in an earlier thread it was so bad one year it was a total black out in Lefcosia.

There's a heavy mist/fog over london today.
The weather people say it's caused by arabic sands being blown this way!
I should normally be able to see the Post Office Tower but it's lost in the smog.
TRNC is obviously 1st in the firing line.

Here in Dipkarpaz my outside table and the terrace were covered in a thick coat of fine reddish dust and now it has rained it's such a mess. It was at night and therefore luckily did not affect my husband

Seems Turkey is having everything thrown at it this week, snow, floods and now the sandstorm. In UK today smog is bad in the Southeast especially Brighton and West Kent
