Penalties for late payment of MOT and/or Car Tax

Does anyone know what the penalties/fines are for late payment of MOT and/or Car Tax.

I recently had to pay an extra 50% for my MOT.

As most of you will be aware, if you try to pay early the staff in the tax office refuse to accept early payment and if you are not around during the 2 week/4week time window you get fined. In this case I was 1 WORKING DAY late in paying. Seems a hefty fine for just one day late.

my friend was late with her road tax i think it worked out at just over 1% per month ie she was 4 months late so it was 4.somthing % fine
