I do not know how anyone else feels about this but my gut feeling was that Eroglu knew what he was doing with the South and I would hate to see Mr Akinci be too quick to settle things against our (The North's) long term best interests.

Gossip amongst locals seems to say he will settle regardless so he will be "The One" who will go down in history. God help us if we have to join the Euro crowd.

It's my understanding that a referendum will be held before any settlement -so the future of the country will be determined by the people -not just one man.

That has been the form up to now but who knows what the new incumbent will agree to?

“This is quite clearly an election for a solution,” said Dr James Ker-Lindsay, an expert on Cyprus at the London School of Economics. “Akinci, more than any other candidate, can reach out to the Greek Cypriots and make the compromises needed to get talks moving forward.”

But can the south make any compromises? I fear not. The problem is that they won't admit the truth of their part in the causes of division and that means they can't be seen to compromise having told their new generations that they are blameless in this whole sorry state of affairs.

Groucho, similar to Turkey refusing to have the Armenian genocide in their school text books isn't it? I once looked through a Greek side text book (English translation)for 14-15 age group and the "troubles" were covered in less than a page and of course it was an illegal invasion by the Turkey that caused it all.

From The Guardian link . In sharp contrast to the affluent south,{ the north is a step back in time with Turkish-run Nicosia resembling a dusty garrison town.} not quite how I see it!

They've obviously not been of late... you have to laugh.

What they don't realise is that the south is turning into a boarded-up wasteland... shops closing faster than new businesses starting up in the north.

This will make no difference whatsoever regarding the Cyprob, as whatever the President gives to the GCs they will still vote NO in the referendum.

What his aim should be (IMO) is to tie the EU down to recognising the North as a separate part of the EU should the North vote in favour of a solution.

As has been said before, the decision on the future of this island rests with the turkish cypriot people. Yes Mr Akinci is the political figurehead but its what is presented as a solution to the local people that is important and it will be for them to decide.

There have been troubled times in the past and I am sure that the turkish cypriots do not want to go back to those dark days. They must not be treated as an inferior in their own land.

Can you really see any decision being made without Turkey`s say so.

Very interesting, but no surprise, although you would think Erdogan would make those sort of comments in private to the new TRNC pres' because that sort of thing just gives the GC's another rattle to throw at the UN et al.

Yes I agree.
I think in private the previous Presidents have their jobs mapped out for them and pre-primed as to what they do and say so this time its all very public ?

Stormy waters ahead .....maybe ?

I wonder how long it will be before the newly elected president has his hands tied behind his back and his mouth gagged.
