I have been trying to get a refund of overpaid tax since January and I can see that it is still showing in credit on my self assessment. I have filled the online request in January, February and again last week. When I was in the UK recently I tried calling them and also sent them a letter around 5 weeks ago and I have still not had a response. In total I have spent around 3 1/2 hours on the phone and just cannot get through. Does anyone know if there is an email address that they will answer?

You are not alone!
Although that may be no consolation whatsoever, the same question is being asked by many other people out there on t'internet...
...and I'm afraid that the answer is NO!
To be honest, even if they had an email address - can you really see them answering any email that you sent, if they haven't responded to any other methods of communication? - I can't!
The consensus seems to be that you are better off using the 'phone, waiting in the queue, and eventually talking to someone, who will at least (possibly ) relate to you as a person, and explain the situation to you, even if they can't actually hurry it along...
Try different times of day, bearing in mind the time difference, and you might strike lucky.
Sorry that it's not what you wanted to hear!

Their numbers, as with many other government departments, have been so reduced over the years by a succession of Governments that they are almost operating under a skeleton staff.
Keith is right, use the phone.

After phoning 3 times on different days and at different times I decided to go down to nearest office (Southport) It has shut down!! so I then decided to phone them again and was waiting for them to answer for 46 minutes. When you do get through they WILL talk to you and not fob you off.
I got told that the tax rebates are expected to be sorted by July.

I have filed self assement for ten years or more .
I have never had issue getting a refund due within a few weeks of filing return .
There is the option to put your account number in if refund is due and I take it you have selected this and put your account number in?
Then here is the twist .the figures I complete are factual ,the calculation the same and therefore the refund shows as due.
So in hoes my p60 amount ,pension paid in gross figure and show my bupa etc and then business miles on my private car . Bump every year small refund which I always know is due .
Then comes a bill in January this year for several hundred pounds ,3 weeks to pay or you get locked up etc etc .
Rings them up and finally gets through and they say that nobody has checked the self assement a for 5 years and when they get round to you they double check against the entry and the code adjustments and role it forward year on year until they cath up to the present day ...hence the several hundreds I owed ,my friend has had 3 refund over 4 years and then a bill for 5k to pay within the month .
We have done nothing wrong other than pay as we earn and the calculator on the filing system doesn't catch up quick enough with the manual person doing it .
So beware
