If you live in the TRNC and are not registered to vote in the uk and paying a utility bill in your name in the uk you will not pass the test set by the banks for money laundering

Wanderer, when did that rule come into force then? No problems at all with us. Can't even remember being asked the question.

To open a UK bank account you need to produce proof of address, if not on the voters roll, and that has to be a recent original utility bill. In addition you have to produce formal identification of who you are eg passport, driving licence. If you can do all these opening an account is relatively easy. However, if you can't comply with these rules it can be very problematic. It's a legal requirement now and complies with standards placed on banks of Knowing Your Customer and is to prevent money laundering, fraud etc.
Opening an account online is no different, having done it, you still have to send back the forms with certified copies of the documentation mentioned above or originals in some instances.
I worked in banking for over 30 years and this was a daily challenge for many potential customers, I believe this is the same across the board with all banks, however, how each bank interprets the law and implements it may differ slightly.
In addition, a credit check is done on opening an account, so if there's any issues on your credit file that's a problem as well as not having any credit history! The law doesn't make it easy, but I suppose it's to protect the masses.
