There has as yet been no official statement from the bank's management, but apparently a Lefkoşa branch manager of one of the biggest Turkish banks has gone missing while in Istanbul ... along with 7 000 000 TL of the bank's money! Apparently he (i find this difficult to believe) had picked up the money (I presume in cash ) from the bank's Istanbul headquarters and was to bring it to Cyprus

Apparetly bank employees have tried, but have been unable, to contact the manager. And I presume it from these employees that the story is seeping out.

[Assuming he has all the notes in 250 TLs, then that is 28000 x 250TL, which would be too much for a briefcase ... it would have to be a suitcase.]

Clearly this is an eye-catching story that I thought you guys might like to read about ... but I get the impression we're not yet hearing the full story.

By the way, clearly I'm not rich enough to have such banknotes, but I have just realised there aren't any 250-TL notes, the biggest is 200 TL. That means the bank manager (apparently the Garanti bank manager) would have needed an even bigger suitcase

I wonder what exchange rates he is offering for sterling? Main chance - he has no overheads or taxes now. If the unlikely event that he was authorised to carry such sums in cash he could well have been mugged by the bloke who is on the loose with a plastic gun. What a chance for the police to solve two crimes simultaneously.

At a guess i would think that someone has offered to carry his suitcase for him.

Lefkoşa's Garanti Bank manager, Mehmet Karımış, has been "caught" at Istanbul's Hilton Hotel by Istanbul Police (not the best place to lie low). Apparently the police are still trying to trace the money.

The TRNC Minister of Finance, Ersin Tatar, was apparently shocked when he learned of the method used to "transfer" money to Cyprus. I think we all are.

Perhaps they should check if anyone has purchased 1,250,000 lottery tickets for tonights euromillions draw

Apparently, they have arrested him in Istanbul today.

According to the main Turkish news on tv, the manager was caught with half of the money, and, apparently, his girlfriend and another person were arrested in Ankara with the rest of the money.

Haven't they heard of internet banking?
