Could anyone give us directions how to get to the British High Commission in Shakespeare Avenue, as we'll have to pick up our passports in a couple of weeks. We did get to the Turkish quarter once and got hopelessly lost, so we wondered if there's a relatively simple route to the Commission. Thanks for any help.

From Girne at the Gonyeli roundabout (brains on sticks, mud on sticks, whatever you know it by) go straight over and at the 3rd set of traffic lights go right. Go all the way along this road to the end, from memory there is a small roundabout at the end, but go straight over and the building is on the right hand side, big garden and wall. You can park in the roadside. The entrance is actually in the side road, but there are signs to tell you. Don't take mobile phones, cameras etc with you as they wont be allowed in. Hope that helps.

Zarafet's directions are good, but re: at the 3rd set of traffic lights go right to be certain you turn right at the correct set of lights look out for the video advertisement screen, that, if waiting at the lights, you'll see on the far right of the junction.

1. This 3rd set of lights is crucial and it is further distingished by a Jeep dealership on the left. You must be in the right hand lane well before you reach the lights.
2. There isn't a roundabout at the end of this road (nor is it the end). From this 3rd set of lights you travel (eventually) through a major shopping area and also go through a set of lights. While there are still many shops, the right of way suddenly bends sharply left just where you want to go physically straight on - so technically you make a right turn across oncoming traffic.

Fantastic, thanks very much, you guys. Getting stuck in the Turkish quarter and getting utterly lost has made us very cautious about forays into Nicosia

JBA I stand corrected. I only said from memory I Thought there was a mini roundabout at the end of the shopping street. I remembered that there was something that meant you could deviate from the desired route, but had to go straight over. Glad you sorted that out, but it is not a right turn as such as it is as the bend begins and therefore could be misleading to say turn right. Anyway I hope they get where they need to go without needing to negotiate the old town.

Zarafet,
"I stand corrected" - you really shouldn't be so humble - your directions were good! There is indeed a small roundabout at the end of the posey Dereboyu Street, albeit a very very small one. Furthermore, as you stated Zarafet, one does go straight on at that very small roundabout ... and the High Commission is about 50 metres from there on the right-hand side.

At the risk of being pedantic, but with the safety of Mobray in mind, my view is that all the advice given is accurate and valid. However, the sharp left turn at a mini roundabout referred to by JBA is virtually 90 degrees. The central reservation gives the appearance of a mini roundabout but it is essential to give way to traffic coming from the left before crossing the junction to carry straight ahead. These pseudo roundabouts were numerous in Cyprus at one time and the cause of many accidents. Thankfully the government are slowly replacing them with more obvious systems. I hope the journey and process goes well for Mobray but, if you encounter any difficulties, do not hesitate to ask for "Mike" who is, amongst other things, the chief administrator at the High Commission, and a thorough gentleman.
