Another query re VPN

I'm going to install a VPN on my computer and wondered if anyone had a recommendation as to the best value service. I basically want to pick up some e-books from Amazon which they refuse to make available to my Kindle as they keep telling me I'm in Australia (rolling eyes), but also to pick up from BBC's IPlayer.

I have used a VPN provided by Paul at 'TIC' - Good service, no complaints - and he is local if you do need to ring him...

Also one from 'My Private Network' - again, good service, no complaints

Both were £5.00 per month.

I currently use Multimax as my ISP, and get a VPN free of charge, no problems - even better

What's Multimax service like and how do you contact them? I'm just coming to the end of my eXtend 3-month agreement so I'm considering alternatives like feeding BBC programmes through my computer to the television. We've currently got Digiturk but frankly think it's really not for us. Would rather watch English programmes direct, and I'm also going to see - when we get a VPN - whether I can pick up Australian Broadcasting programmes as they do some good stuff, plus SBS,the mutlicultural channel.

Andrew, the VPNs typically form the slowest part of the link (unless the BBC /ITV servers are very busy) and do give you something over 1Mbps, which is enough to watch TV - albeit not in HD

MoBry,

Presumably you would need another, Australian-based, VPN to get Australian programmes, in addition to the UK one for UK programmes.

Someone else may have other ideas ... - Anyone?

Multimax's service is OK, their contact details are plastered all over this and other forums. Use the 'Search' facility!

That's interesting, as I have always used My.Private.Network, but when my Multimax was installed last week, it somehow got wiped off. When I mentioned this to them they said nothing to do with them. It wasn't a problem as I just re-installed mine, but I didn't know that Multimax could have given me a vpn, and the tech man didn't offer.

Multimax 'automatically' VPN any traffic to BBC websites, so for access to bbc including iplayer you do not need to do anything. For any other UK restricted sites like ITV or 4oD you will need to set up and use the manual VPN, see the link in the post above.

Andrew, I think you do have to do something to get the VPN with Multimax(as usual, I don't know what) but when I tried to get on to a site that I usually can with my VPN, after I'd had my Multimax installed, it said I was not in England and could not access it. I then re-installed My Private Network VPN and all was ok, so I don't think it's their automatically. As you can see, these last 2 weeks have all been a bit too technical for me. To think we all once lived without mobile phones, internet and all this technical stuff.

If you go to a BBC site with a multimax connection, then the BBC site will think you are in the UK and everything should work without the need for a VPN (unless you are using an apple Mac or iPad).

For any other sites that require you to be in the UK, you will need to use a VPN. You can use My Private Network, or any other third party VPN or you can use the free Multimax VPN.

Thanks Erol for all your help on here, it's great to be able to ask questions and get answers very quickly,(which is what myself and a lot of others missed about 44 ).this forum seems to be getting busier and busier, which is great.

I used Erol's 'guide' a few weeks ago, and set up my free Multimax VPN very easily (quite an achievement for a ludite like me) and it works very well, even for fussy sites like Camelot and others, who normally will not allow you to access your account on their site unless in the UK.

Also echo ss1's comments about quick feedback, which has been missing since the demise of C44.

Well, I hope we get Multimax set up shortly, as eXtend finishes tomorrow. We are also going to close down our Digiturk service, it's appalling. We keep losing a picture, we've had a technician around three times and he's as surly as they come, so we'll work through the computer once Multimax is finalised.

Marion the Multimax free VPN will only work for Multimax customers.
ham on brown wrote:How do you do it on an iPad and mac pls ?
To set up the VPN on Mac / iPad , you need to go to settings / network and create a new connection of type VPN. You need to set the VPN type to 'PPTP' , the server address to 'vpn.mmcyp.com' and the username to 'tvmax' and password to 'tvmax'.

Or if you preffer you can always arrange to bring your iPad or Mac to me at the Girne office and I will set it up for you. Please do message me if you want to do this as I am only in the office on certain days and times.
