When booking some hotels or buying some items in North Cyprus why do they ask for payment in Euros ?

As far as Hotels go, I'd hazard a guess that they're trying to cater for EU visitors - plus, it doesn't sound so much in Euros
Shops selling imported goods may have purchased those goods with Euros, US Dollars, or whatever, and normally price them up in the same currency - it saves having to 're-price-label' the items every day, as the exchange rate varies, in order to maintain the expected profit margin.

As above and Keith reply. That was exactly the answer given to me earlier this year when I was in a Yapi market looking at Gardening tools.

Yes of course they will take Lira and they don't expect you hand over Euro, Dollar or Sterling, they just price it that way. However, you do have to be aware of the poor rate of exchange they give you when you ask the checkout people!!
