Today is the first day of Ramadan when serious Muslims fast during daylight hours. Nothing may pass their lips; food, water - even cigarettte smoke.
Please be conscious of this and if you know a devout Muslim please respect their religion and do not eat or drink in their presence as it is hard enough for them.

I think they can obtain dispensations for medical reasons plus the elderly and pregnant women. For the others it must be very, very hard in this weather. On the Arabic TV stations there are even special cooking programmes explaining and showing how to cope and not become ill by eating specific combinations of food in the evening. Not something I could cope with, but then I'm not a devout Muslim.

You have to feel for them at this time of year.
17 hours of daylight instead of 8 hours in the winter.
Thank God I'm an atheist.

Don't condemn a person for his / her beliefs, for ignorance is path leads to misjudge and hatred.
Fasting is like any other choices of life. If a person chose to refrain from the pleasures of life for one month to please himself/ herself or to please "his God", then, who am I to judge their action.
17 hours of fasting is hard in our opinion, but it could be easy and pleasurable practice for that devoted Muslim.
I do not understand Islam or any other religions, yet I respect the core of others faith and the purpose of their spiritual attachment to their religion.
By the way,....
Can you translate "Thank God I'm an atheist". If one is an atheist, how can he be thankful to an entity that does not exist???
Be good

Yes I can translate - it was humour.
Now can you point out where I condemn anyone or anything in discussing the difference between daylight in the winter as opposed to the summer and having sympathy with an activity (or lack of it to be more precise) which is dependent upon it?

I guess I misread the reply.. No offence meant through my response, as I do not shy from apologising where is required....
Blame it on the old age.
Ramadan is the month of forgiveness (as I was told)

No worries - no need to apologise.
