have just had my laptop formatted, now the sound is very quite, did alter it myself when new but have forgotten how I did it. does anyone know what to do.

Right click on the speaker on the taskbar, you will see volume mixer, open this and alter the volume to suit.

its not that control, have done that it is at its highest, you have to go into speakers on control panel and alter something on there, cant remember what.
