Are people becoming more and more dependent on this forum for EVERYTHING.
I can understand people asking where you can purchase objects that you are unable to find in the normal way.
But people are asking where to buy televisions, beds etc. for Gods sake please use your common and source these things yourself.
Please don't think I am being confrontational because I am not, but lets have some good topics posted what we can all join in with.
People keep saying ooh don't let it become another 44 but on that forum you had some decent discussions or if you want arguments, but it was at times fun. Now, if you don't know which supermarket sells sweet potatoes its pointless logging on, and yes if you are going to tell me not to log on I do it to see what is on offer at Starling.

I do believe it is you.

Surely this is why a forum is here so that people can ask for help to source items when they have never had to in a country where they do not speak the language readily.

Why not ask for advice? Most of us are willing to share where we have been and received good service and where we have been and been royally ripped off!

If you do not wish to read or help on these topics then do not open the thread.

I am not being confrontational either however if you wish to have some good topics where everyone can join in then start some ....easy really.

In a country where goods are of a very variable quality I think it is good to share experiences with others. As we all know many of the goods on offer here are not good quality so if you have found something which is worth buying - please share the experience

I love this forum, so many helpful people

I was afraid to ask anything on 44 someone would always turn it into an argument

I thought a Forum was for asking questions and discussion? I have been here nearly 11 months and find the advice about where things are is invaluable. I do not have the time to source everything i need as i work during the week. It is better getting straight to the solution rather than wasting time getting there (in my case), but i do understand people like to research etc.......

No, I did mean what I said about being non confrontational, but when you upset the norm that is when it gets interesting.And yes I take up my right to speak with the freedom you so rightly point out that I have. And I being a member of this forum choose to log on when I like and comment freely on subjects that are there to be read on a public forum.

I would agree with Topten that it would be nice to have some fun postings - anyone?

Its not that there are too many of the "where can I find?" type threads - as nearly everyone has said these serve a useful purpose. It that there are not enough genuine discussion - an interesting forum needs a mixture of both. There are two problems:

1. There are are echoes of Cyprus 44 here. I for one hestitate to enter a thread on a contentious subject for fear of getting a lot of offensive personal remarks - as indeed happened recently .

2. I keep saying this, but I do wish people would be clearer in their heading: "eg, Where can I find baked beans West of Girne" not just "where can I find". I too often find that I click on a thread in a vague spirit of helpfullness only to find I have wasted time because I dont know the answer or quite often did not even know what the item is, or if it existed Same with "teaser" titles for example - it is irritating to find a post is advetising a type of alcohol if one doesnt drink the stuff! Say what you are advertising, or recommending (or even criticising) and save the time of people who arent interested

Don,t take it to heart top ten you at least cheered me up today. You put me in mind of Richard Wilson I think his name was grumpy nut funny.

Most of you say that you don't want this forum to slip into the ways of 44, but from a valid posting I have been told child like,something that 5yr old kids say to each other to play on the "railway lines", and been called a miserable sod I think that's what he/she meant. We are I believe ADULTS I would further say that most of you will not see 60 again, so come on start and act like adults if someone calls you a name laugh it off. If someone wants a TV get off your arse and go to town there is plethora of shops. I have even seen posts that tell us it is raining in Lapta or some other place on the island, come on, as stated originally if you cannot find some item in the normal way then yes ask on here, but just to sit on your arse ask where can I find is pathetic.

1. I liked Cyprus44 and was sad to see it close. I was able to 'sort the wheat from the chaff'
2. I too would like to read interesting topics, I'd also like to solve world peace, the Greece financial problems, Ukraine, ISIS etc. I can but dream
3. What else is this forum for if not to ask questions, post opinions, share thoughts, give advice and be involved in local life?
4. I agree that the topic headings could be a little more specific but then again if I'm looking at this forum I can hardly say I'm that busy.

Fortunately this forum has not slipped down the road of Cyprus44 and it definately should not....at the end of its days Cyprus44 was unfortunately dragged down by a small number of pretty unscrupulous peoplem who took pleasure in using the written word as a form of bullying. Yesnwe are allmadults but unfortunately not everyone acted as if they were.

I believe this forum provides the service that people want. It may be very useful for some to know where to get a bargain 4 pack of Heinz Baked Beans...if thats what they like. Also perphaps there are some who maybe own a property in Lapta that are living in the UK who, would be interested to know its raining in Lapta....why not. Similarly there are some who like to use this forum to seek out recommendations for a shop, service etc
and why not the forum is there for all to enjoy and use.

In addition a search on the forum does bring up interesting debates, such as internet service, the Cyprus problem....reliving past years in Cyprus etc etc to name but a few. So to say that there is not interesting debate is untrue. Providing people use the forum as it should be used and post within the forum rules then that is fine.

Well, Geroff, I rekcon that it could well be that delightful Devon offers a better deal on Baked Beans than Lemar does, but just every onc e in a while they are cheap enough to buy in a year's supply. Of course it rather depends how much you want to be part of a replay of that famous writing 'Gone with the Wind'. erhaps a diet of Devon cream would be better, and I KNOW a good place in Devon for that! But maybe you know better.

And as to the Forum, well, I like the variety it offers on everything, - all things to all people, even if the truth is not fully revealed on the cheapest Baked bEANS.

Is it a good idea for Soner / mods to have a discussion section on this very helpful and non threatening forum? Wouldn't want to go there meself as I've marked toooo many "discursive essays" as a lecturer. My T shirt logo is, "I don't want to hear your opinion thanks unless I ask for it."

Just give me helpful advice when I ask please and of course where to buy the best and least expensive baked beans.

Make your own baked beans ; they're superior to the tinned variety, and they're cheaper.

Yes, you do get people on here moaning about Internet service/provider's and it as been done to death, the Cyprus problem is also like discussing the weather there is bugger all you can do about it. Then there is the reliving of the short trouser days of Cyprus past, yes it, I dare say is interesting, but it is not thought provoking for the majority of people who were not there at the time. And my last post on this subject, is that this post as aroused people from their soporific lifestyle's and created an interesting debate, even some have had their sense of humour reawakened which must have taken a great effort so well done. And I never mentioned all the advertising on the general index.

I kind of agree with Topten, this forum is very informative with lots of useful info but I also used to like the arguments on 44, I used to laugh out loud at some of the antics on there and some of the contributors like Wynyard were mint!!

As has been said already Cyprus44 went downhill rapidly just before it closed down. What may have been read as an argument by some was also seen as on line bullying by others. Some of the posted comments and vitriol against others was not pleasant. So I can confirm that the moderators will allow healthy debate within the rules, but will not allow this forum to plummet to the depths of Cyprus44.

Writing as a contributor to this thread, I must admit that I am struggling to understand some of toptens postings. I believed that topten was bemoaning the fact that there were no lively debates or discussions on this forum and most of the postings were about trivia such as price of beans, rain in Lapta, where to buy etc etc. Well these trivial postings are often very useful and interesting to others. As for debate, I did give a few examples such as internet service, Cyprus problem, Cyprus relived etc, there are many others........however topten responded by saying that the inetrnet debate had apeared often (Will no doubt be debated again), the Cyprus problem is nothing we can do anything about (But many have an opinion which often leads to interesting discussion) and Cyprus relived was of no interest for them (But judging by the postings on the topic, it was of great interest to many).

Maybe it is me but not really sure what topten wants out of this forum

I agree with Posh, perhaps now topten has left the island ,and he really has no interest in all the helpful stuff we share on here ,he should find a debating forum closer to home

And as I stated in the original post AFTER THE NORMAL WAY OF TRYING TO FIND i.e. going into numerous shops and being unlucky ask on here. Is this clear because as said I don't find it wrong to ask on here as long as you have got off your backside and looked. And some things are a little bit more difficult to source than beds & televisions.

What about the folk who are not well enough to tramp around the shops, or make innumerable phone calls, or may not have transport? To them the Forum is pure gold as they can (hopefully) find their answers and then pursue them.

Personally I would rather find an answer in the comfort of my own home, whatever my state of health, but then I am one of those Leos who is just lazy (someone once wrote that we are 'Proud, lazy, Leos'.

Horses for courses! And this 'horse' is well ridden by many happy KibKomers! We all make our choices. If you want exercise, then go walkabouts to try and fine something, but always remember that it might be on the industrial estate in Lefkosia, or in a shop in the backstreets of Famagusta, and how is one to find that out, unless asking others via the forum?

Not everyone is up to wandering around the shops, for many reasons.......possibly health reasons, maybe they are working and simply do not have time. Some may struggle with the language so phoning for information may not work.

I to am a Leo and would much rather do some research via this forum and ask the help or advice of Kibkomers to narrow down my preferred options and then once decided take a trip out to pick up those cheap baked beans.....or even drive to Lapta to take in a rain shower.

It's okay to share tips isn't it? That's all people do if they are chatting in a social setting....same difference.

At least Keith Caley found something nice to say......worth the thread for that alone!!
