Safety in TRNC

There is a lot of discussion here in the UK following Friday's terrible events in Tunisia about the safety of visiting Muslim countries. My wife and I are coming to the Girne area for a 2 week holiday next month and she is getting a bit nervous. We have been several times before and have never had anything but a warm reception from locals and ex-pats alike. What is the view on here on any risks in TRNC?

Too be honest ....... none!

I cannot imagine why there would be any trouble as there was last friday in Tunisia or France in a country that is not even recognised so therefore they would receive not recognition of their acts.

Turkey has the second largest military force in NATO after the US.
North Cyprus is 'awash' with Turkish military bases, providing more security than you wolud probably get in the UK or anywhere in the EU. In fact, there is far more 'security' in NC than in S (EU) Cyprus.

Any perceived threat of action by ISIS is unfounded. ISIS is Sunni Muslim, as is predominately Turkey and N Cyprus.

ISIS know that to attempt any direct action against Turkey or N Cyprus would be a fatal move on their part.

North Cyprus is possibly the safest place in the Med/Middle East to travel to.

(probably safer than visiting Bradford or Birmingham,.... Oh dear! I await the PC flak!)

Well said Owl, I feel so safe here, but always on edge when travelling by tube in the UK. Please tell your family they shouldn't worry, except crossing the road or driving then be careful

The case in Tunisia was a lone wolf, this type of incident is not easy to predict and could occur anywhere. We have just had a potential incident intercepted in the south, and it is in all our interests to be aware of the security situation and make note or report anything we believe to be suspicious, to say nothing will happen in NC because of the army presence is niaeve, any westerner is a potential target of these people.
I see cars in Girne daily with Iraqi number plates, that tells me travel from these troubled areas to NC would not be a problem for these people, if anything ferry access from Southern Turkey to Girne is the Achilles heel for the whole of Cyprus the Uk bases are on full alert because of this, anybody traveling here believing there is no risk needs a reality check.

Maxim while I agree with much of your post regarding security I reject your criticism with regard lax security in the north
It was from the south gc,s and Syrians were caught exporting pickups to Syria it was in the south the home made fertiliser bombs were found. The problem is there is no security on the border going north from the south till you get to the Turkish Cypriot side. Cyprus as a whole is awash with arms and munitions left behind after 56 to 74. And god knows how many murderers are walking the streets in the south and most likely in senior positions in the government too. We buried one such family last week resulting from fanatics in the south. The police here even catch people who steal TV,s here so I would give little chance to someone committing an act as we had in Tunisia but then most intend to die anyway.

I heartedly agree with owl. Whilst nowhere can be guaranteed 100% safe from terrorist attack, I would say the TRNC would be on the very bottom of my list.

A few easily brainwashed would be terrorists have used the Larnaca then north to Turkey route how many ? who knows ?

http://www.wsj.com/articles/how-jihadis ... 1424653670

I've lived in London all my life and I would not walk the streets of London at night alone, would you ?

I don't think Cyprus is on the terrorists radar yet.

Bottom line if you walked the beach in Tunisia half an hour before the atrosities took place and asked each individual if they felt safe and immune from any terrorist act , they would have all turned round and said what a wonderfull place and would not of expected to dead in the next hour. Attacks such as the Tunisia event are random, opertunist, and could happen anywhere. Cyprus is not immune, as a popular western holiday destination can only be a prime target, goverments or the media will be reluctant to advise a problem exists due to loss of tourist income, look at the British goverments advice on travel to Cyprus, the decission then rests in the hands of the individual. I certainly would not advise any of my family to travel to Cyprus or Turkey.

I've looked at the FCO website on terrorist threats and at the moment Cyprus ranks lower then Belgium in terms of risk.

However you can never be sure about the risk can you? Ask the families of the 7/7 bombings nearly a decade ago.

What is now clear is that 'ISIS' is a threat to everyone, its a threat that either has to be fought in Syria and Iraq or on the streets of Europe. Perhaps some of the Turkish troops camped out in Cyprus would be better redeployed to the border with Syria to stop more nutters crossing to swell the ranks of of the jihadi monsters.

.....Oh and perhaps we can find out which companies are buying the oil from the refineries in ISIS controlled areas.
