Why have you closed the Hedgehog thread ?

I simply can not understand why you would close it and then leave this abhorent act open for people to read....its disgusting.

Either leave it open for people to add to it or remove it from the forum altogether.


Can I just say (before you close this aswell) how the hell can any sane (or sober) person mistake a Hedgehog to a rat, stand over it with a rock and still not be unaware what it is and then kill it......(Removed by moderator)

To the nice people on here,just to let you know another HEDGEHOG appeared thıs evening,spotted by my clever Cypriot terrier,who now knows they are friends.
İr looks like they are livıng ın some rough grass between lemon trees,and crossing the drive to get water from veg patch.
Tomorrow İ will buıld a safe home for any other family members hiding in the grass,to try and keep them in my garden.

İf you cannot accept that last nıght,ın the dark,İ thought İ had killed a rat,and İ livıng with that guilt,please do not any further nasty comments.
My last posting on this matter.

I still can't understand why you made the original post. What kind of reaction did you expect?

These are wild animals and need to roam not kept in a garden, no need to build a safe home in the garden, leave them free.

I'm pretty sure Mike feels suitably chastened and his act of confession and contrition should only be marvelled at in this time of 'blame anyone but oneself' . First stone casting and sin?

I would like to make a plea in general for the wildlife of Cyprus and advocate that we don't kill anything we are not absolutely sure about and the possible endangered status of. That includes snakes.... I will grant you complete liberty to kill mozzies so there - take it on board and have free rein - kill as many as you like they are not endangered....

As a matter of interest I'm becoming more convinced that the native species of hedgehog could claim to be the worlds smallest.... if you Google the subject it seems the current claim is generally for a sub-species somewhat bigger than those that we see here - which as adults are really still quite tiny. So rather than kill them it would be good to gather some stats.... length nose to bum and weight. So if anyone feels so inclined let's do a bit of science and give up the pogrom of things we don't understand.

I love hedgehogs but have never seen one here. My only "grouse" about them in the UK was the fact they were infested with fleas. As to Grouchos remarks about snakes, please, please don't kill. I followed behind a car the other day (a young local I recognised)) who swerved dangerously in order to run over one of the harmless black snakes. Why can't the elderly locals educate their children and grandchildren, From what I've read, the older locals used to put milk out to feed the black snakes and encouraged them into their gardens. Why do homo sapiens have this urge to destroy and kill anything that doesn't fit in with their lifestyle and "was just a bit of fun"

Yes Sophie, I was not advocating killing snakes only mozzies - they are endangered and have protected status - i.e. it is illegal to kill snakes. They kill vermin and provide a useful natural balance. You have misread my post...

Kill as many mozzies as you like - this island was once malarial due to mozzies and we don't want that back!

However, reading his latest post, unless Mike is one of those strange people who feel the need to floodlight thier gardens and blank out the stars and moon, I can understand it might to possibleto mistake a hedgehog for a rat in the dark, paritucarly if it wasnt curled up. And surely rats can be killed (but not by poison). I had a friend who dies of Weil's disease and it wasnt any easy death.

I would not kill a hedgehog, but I would not encourage it to live in my garden (particularly as I have dogs) as they are notorious for having fleas. And be careful about that clever little Cyprus terrior - they have a habit of sticiking their cute little noses where they arent wanted and many a dog has suffered from hedgehog spines in thier delicate noses.

A lady once saw a hedgehog in the dark on her front step and put a bowl of milk out for it. She opened the door next morning to find the milk untouched and curled up next to it the new loo brush that had dopped out of her shopping bag.

When I was driving on a (then) quiet Cyprus lane I saw on oncoming car stop suddenly and wait - forunately curious as to what he had stopped for I slowed which was fortunate as I then also had to stop to let the ghekko cross the road! We both then watched fascinated as it then climbed a mesh fence hand over hand just like a man. The other driver of a fast car to my surprise was a young, Turkish male. I have been advised by several locals to make a noise in snake country (stamp feet on bang a stick onthe ground) to frighten them away, and not to kill the black ones.

I have seen quite a few hedgehogs here and they are longer, slimmer and considerably faster than those in the UK - so I could perhaps understand how one could be mistaken for a rat in the dark.

Personally. it's not an animal I would get sentimental about. Maybe that's a reaction to living for many years very close to the over sentimental and publicity hungry St. Tiggywinkles. I got a knock on my door one night and it was a reporter from National Geographic who wanted me to help him find some uninjured hedgehogs for photos for an article he was doing on St. Tiggywinkles. I sent him away.

In the Hebrides they organised a total cull of hedgehogs because their taste for eggs was seriously reducing the population of rare ground-nesting birds. So they are not all good.

Surely every one knows what a hedgehog looks like and it is nothing like a rat.

99% of wild creatures on our planet serve a purpose. I cannot really thing of one for mozzies except perhaps to lower the human population that is slowly and surely eradicating our planet. Fleas? Tics? I do not know their purpose yet but maybe one day I will.
I hve seen many huge hedgehogs on our mountains here. They will eat the slugs and snails from your garden, a shallow bowl of water can save their lives inthis hot weather

We don't get many mozzies in Esentepe but when we do get the odd one we've got the electric Executioner (which looks like a tennis racket) and we play Murray v Djorkovic... a very satisfying crack accompanies a point for Murray and the demise of a mozzie without a nasty stain on the wall...

You can stillreadthe hedgehog thread at bottom of page headed up I now know difference between hedgehog and....... We have had hedgehogs in our garden for 7 years and this post was disgusting and showed no remorse. We have also had rats and call belidiye. Stay offthe drink if you dont know difference. Here they are longer legged andmove fast but give off a wonderful loud snuffling noise as they forage in the garden.

actually a friend saw one in Ozankoy last night. I haven't seen one for about 8 years.

If we are out and about after dark we very often see one or two hedgehogs scurrying about across the roads but only the small species (10cm) with proportionately big ears... never seen the large ones alluded to in previous posts.. but they may be further up the mountain range. As we see ones that are years old we know they are a small breed that we see and not just babies - we see those too and they are tiny mouse sized and extra cute.

We have noticed and commented on the lower numbers seen this year but this will be a natural fluctuation in numbers and sightings I'm hoping....

I wish someone would tell my Pointer not to kill wild animals etc. Little sod kills lizards, geckos, Chameleons, tree rats even dragon flies Killed a snake(Blunt nosed viper) 2 years ago, but not before it bit her on the face. She spent 16 days at Petcross on a drip. That experience still won't stop her doing it again,given half a chance!
