hi all I am wondering what is the duty payable roughly on a 3 year old car, I am thinking that my car being of value £10,000 if I work on the duty being 100% then which would be £10,000 I could not buy a new or reasonably new vehicle for £10,000 and the car I have has only 5000 miles on the clock.

Depends on engine size, weight, emissions, fuel type, and very often the day of the week it is imported.

Do your homework carefully on this, many have had a good experience, many more have caught a cold.

Ah but if you sold it in the UK for £10k and then include the £6k you don't have to pay for importing it and £1k approximate cost transporting it you have £17k to spend..... So the maths is closer than your original post would imply.

However if you love the car bring it!

I believe that they tax you on the value of the car on the day that you bought it - or thereabouts, which would unfortunately mean paying rather more tax.

Best to get a quote from the Customs people (in writing if possible ) before deciding - although members have reported doing just that, and then being charged even more 'on the day'...

Is that to find out what the new price was?

And who told you that? - The Customs people or a fella down the pub?

Seriously, ask them for a quote - they are the only people who can give you a definitive answer.

ok keith looking at the second hand car prices I think if they hit me with 100% duty

I have recently imported a car. You should go to the Customs office with details of your car(copy of log book is useful) and also the current mileage.They will give you an estimate of the tax and will write it down for you. I actually paid less in the end than the actual estimate.
I used Euromed to ship the car and they provide you with an agent at the port who helps you with all the documentation and liases with the Customs office etc .
If you intend to fill the car with goods then you should make an inventory and have this attached to the shipping document.Otherwise this has to be done at the port(Customs empty the car and you then have to prepare the inventory there).This then means you have to go back to the Customs and have it stamped befoer Customs will let you take the car out of the port.
The tax is based on Glasses Guide and they took the middle market figure from this.The tax was less than 60% and I thought they were very fair.

hi snowy that makes me more optimistic,i cant go to the customs office bcos we are not over until October and the car will be coming in a container with our house contents.

Snowy, I'm glad that you had such a positive experience with Customs.

However, I have spoken to people who have had just the opposite experience - where no allowance was made for condition, mileage or even AGE, so that they have been charged roughly 60% of the new price of the vehicle.

As with so many things, it could depend on the officer that you deal with on the day - because training is a bit hit-and-miss, different officials interpret the regulations in different ways, and if they're not sure, then they'll just 'make it up' as they go along, rather than admit ignorance...

Thats good lowest level of tax on engine size and fuel
Worst is a 2 litre plus diesel
Go to the Customs in Lefkoda with a copy of the log book and get a quite
Euro med bought our car over 6 years ago good service on a ro- ro ferry (you cant join the car) cost us £650 and had to take the 1.25 Fiesta to Ipswich dock

thanks wanderer the thing is if it was 100% I would still be quids in judging by the used car prices,i know I will have to change the plates and glasses guide gave me a price of £9,500 but I am reluctant to lt go as it is like new 5000 miles and is very reliable

I imported 2 cars a year ago (big diesel 4WD & small petrol car) both vehicles less than 3 years old. It was approx. 60% of the Glass' Guide for the current year / age of the vehicle (not new price). I agree with other posters - go to the tax office and get a better idea of likely tax paid (and both mine came in slightly under that quote).

My son drove a van over last year and when he went to the customs office I was with him. They looked in the glasses guide and he paid tax on the second hand value of the van in 2014. The van was 5 years old at the time.

Your car is probably worth about £11500 in the UK plus 60% tax £6900 plus £1000 to get it there you are looking at just short of 20 grand ?

You could get a lot of car for that money over there ?

turtle says I could buy a lot of car for £20,000 but from have looked at on the web I can only see second hand cars which are overpriced but I cannot find a dealer showing new prices so I don't know,could someone pleeeeeeze give me any prices for an average new car so I can at least make up my mind whether to ship mine,any car new price,thanks

They are what we know in the UK as Grey Imports , mine is a 2012 Mitsubishi Colt and I paid £ 7750 , bought with 20k km on the clock , there are new dealerships here BUT the servicing can be a bit hit and miss New car prices Fiesta £ 11k BMW 320 £ 25k

I would recommend you go to Tiga Trading for a good small car and get a Suzuki Swift. Ours was almost new, brilliant car, constant servicing by Tiga and cost us about £10.000. best thing we everbought here

Yes that price is correct though as I said servicing is a bit hit and miss, the " Technicians" don't always have access to the same rigorous training that dealers in the UK have , hence I've always gone the grey import route from Tiga and just as in the UK the vehicles are much higher spec than EU models.

Carlee I was going to buy a bargain car to import, but was told by Embassy that tax was on glasses guide at 60%, which meant I did not have a bargain, car prices here are extortionate, I will prob be shot down, your car is new on mileage, and you are obvisously happy with it, so I would look into importing it if I was you, regret not doing it myself with my old car!

but a lot of people are happy with their cars and I am undecided I can probably find a decent car for around £14000 I reckon it would save a lot of hassle
