Just wondering if there is anything I could buy i.e like an adaptor to protect my fridge/freezer to the many power cuts you guts have in TRNC ?

You should use a voltage regulator to protect all of your electrical/electronic appliances against the surges when the power comes back on.

A generator with auto-start will keep your food fresh, provided that you're here to keep the fuel tank topped up.

If you're going to be away, switch off, empty and clean the appliance, and leave the doors open.

I've covered all the scenarios, because you didn't specify...

Until very recently we haven't had a power for about 5 months...

Most cuts are less than an hour... no harm will come to food if the fridge/freezer is left shut and not opened until the power is back...

Surges when the power comes back are an issue and we have lost two microwaves and the printed circuits in two aircon units due to this problem... a voltage regulator would have prevented this. Many outlets here sell them - Tektan and Electrokur. There are big ones that do your whole house and individual ones that can protect several items... we have two one for TV etc. and one for computers, router and wi-fi.

Before you all rush out and buy voltage regulators to protect yourself from power surges - have you had the new digital electric meter installed yet? This "Clever" meter is supposed to protect you from surges and browns and the guy in the Kibtek office was at some pains to tell me this and prove what a good job they are doing for the public. So just a thought for you.

Should I ever receive my electric bill, I will be asking what happens if I get a power surge through the new KIBTEK owned meter, who pays for the damage when the meter does not work as advertised?????

We bought some individual surge protectors from the UK which we use for our fridge freezer etc.

I don't know if you can buy them here - I would try laconic computer shops or Electrocur,

I wouldn't want a Generator as back-up!
Who wants a smelly thumping genny pumping out exhaust fumes and having cans of diesel hanging around?
The problem with 'Auto Start' generators is that they often 'don't'.

Get a small battery back up Solar System, or go the whole hog, as I did, and get a full Solar System and got totally 'Off-Grid'. No more 'cuts', no more 'surges',...Bliss!

Oh the luxury of being able to use aircons for heat or cool 24/7 without any worry about bills!

Hi Owl is it not expensive in NC to install we were thinking of putting solar but was advised that the return rate for a 3 bed villa was expensive. Any idea on price and who? Cheers

There is not a lot of difference between installation costs in NC compared to EU or UK. The REAL difference is that NC is a perfect place for efficient Solar, even in Winter. Returns are actually quite good due to the high cost of electricity in NC.

You can spend as much or as little as you want, from around £2,500 for solar pool pumping (which gives the fastest return), to £10,000 to £25,000 for a fully off grid system.

I, and a number of others I know, have all used Kibsolar and been very happy with the professional 'no-nonsense' advice and technical knowledge.
