Information needed urgently

If someone's British passport has expired is it possible to get a temporary one or paper very quickly ie day or so to enable them to leave country ie urgent medical treatment. Any advice welcome. Thank you.

We were asked to transfer a Lady to Larnaca, by the British Embassy we were handed papers for her (she had no passport I do not know her situation) and enough money to get herself a coffee
