PRESS RELEASE – NORTH CYPRUS CRICKET
Creditwest Autumn Cricket League
Cricket returns to North Cyprus this Sunday, with the first round of pool games in Creditwest Autumn League. Chairman Nigel Holman said the TRNC Cricket Association is delighted cricket continues booming with 9 teams taking part, being 50% more than 6 months ago.
The league is divided into 3 pools, with the winners of each and the best runner up going forward to semi-finals, then a final at the end of November. Holman further excitedly added, for the first time the winner will play the winner of the South Cyprus league to become the overall champions of All Cyprus. He wondered if one of the newbies from the North could possibly beat the best of the South’s very established sides.
Communications Manager Ian Fell wanted to predict the semi-finalist, going for Gentlemen of Girne, Taşınköy (Lefkoşa), Cyprus All Stars (Karaoğlanoğlu) and Doğanköy, whilst TRNC captain Danish Afridi thought one of the university teams like Istanbul Technical University might come through as dark horses, having seen several of their side play.
The Association has been working hard training new umpires and scorers during the summer, co-ordinator George Ward said he was delighted with Tom Shirley’s, Terry Veal’s and Paula Shirly’s progress, who along with more experienced Phill Lulock’s will join last season’s umpires Keith Lloyd, Kevin Horsford, Nigel Holman and scorers Ian Fell and Lynn Holman
Sunday, also sees the debut of the Association’s new ICC funded artificial pitch, Tad Haigh proudly told us, 4,000 euros had been provided to improve facilities in the North and getting the best possible playing surface along with new bats and other equipment for teams wanting to start, was the only way forward.
Sunday’s games are Girne v Cyprus International University at 10am and Doğanköy v Taşınköy at 1.30pm at Ozanköy Football Club.

Nigel
