If you are comparing this with UK prices, then this was reasonable. The cost depends on so many factors i.e. quality of lenses ( these do vary considerably), quality of frames - again a huge choice from cheap to very expensive. Type of varifocal and type of coating again there are several choices available. I had spectacles in the UK with designer frames, varifocal thin and light lenses, anti glare coating and photochromatic option - price around £600 sterling.

The last pair they made me a few years ago were £250. The new ones have a much thinner lense than last time.

I agree with muffin 1 - I paid 400.00GBP so 200.00GBP was a fair price.

PHubby got his new glasses from Specsaver at the end of July. Designer frames, highest spec varifocal lens, photo chromatic and it was under £200. He didn't have the anti glare option though.

In the UK my husband bought a pair and got another for half price - total cost 90 pounds but he doesn't have varifocal lenses. These are much more expensive. I paid 350 pound for my last pair in the UK and that was almost 2 years ago. So 200 pounds seems very reasonable to me.

Unfortunately Deniz1, there are always the cynics willing to pitch in.....we have bought our specs from Akay here for years now, and I can catagorically say that, for the type we have, i.e. varifocals/ reactorlight (and more thorough testing than I have ever got in UK)....it is cheaper than the UK, unless of course you shop in the pound shop for reading glasses...lol.

Plus their large two storey emporium with thousands of specs to choose from. This is directly opposite the state hospital in Lefkosa,

Thanks for the directions, Folks.
Just been down to the shop on Mete Adanır Cad Girne, and ordered two pairs of reading glasses, for 380 TL - they'll be ready later today, or tomorrow morning.
Happy Hot Hippo!

I always get my specs in Cyprus, I have a strong prescription and varifocals, so always cheaper than the UK.

Went to Akay yesterday - next door to Deniz Plaza on the main road through Girne. I bought:-
1 new frame + lenses and extra hard coating 370tl
1 replacement lenses for existing frame, polarised, extra hard coating, extra thin lens, anti glare coating 510tl
1 replacement lenses for existing reading glasses and extra hard coating 150tl
I was surprised at how happily they would refit frames I already owned - unlike my last memories of UK opticians (but that was 12 years ago and has maybe changed now).
The extra hard coating meant 1 week delay as they have to send away. when the lenses arrive they said 1 hour to fit and meanwhile I retain my existing glasses.
