Disappearing pets

Hi

Does anyone know if the belediyesi are going around picking up animals, or is it a coincidence that there a spate of missing dogs at the moment? Our pointer Lucy is missing and searched everywhere, she literally seems to have vanished without a trace from our Lapta home. I have noticed upon searching all of the TRNC pet pages etc that there are lots of animals disappearing entirely. (i have a post and picture of our missing dog on the pet section). Locals that I have spoken to seem to think hunters may be the reason behind certain breeds vanishing.

Thanks

Yes hunting type dogs are at risk of being appropriated by hunters and a pointer would be at risk. When I acquired a spaniel (he had been abandoned by the roadside) I was twice approached by hunters who thought I should give them the dog as they thought it a waste for a useful working dog to be kept as a pet! Needless to say I refused and I havent had a social life since since I am scared to leave him and his adopted sisters outdoors (they never go alone out of the garden) and cant afford kennels or dog sitters. I also promptly had him neutered so there was not temptation no use him for breeding, but of course that dont work with a bitch. On the other hand he did disappear once when a small puppy (got under a gate I thought he couldn't) and was missing for two weeks. I asked all the locals and eventually he was returned (thin and bedraggled but otherwise unharmed) by a local child who said he was found in an empty house so dont give up hope..

There have also been reports of pedigree dogs being kidnapped for onward sale,

I dont think the Belidiye pick up individual dogs unless they are dangerous or causing damage. They usually involve a vet and./or animal charity in round ups, and people do tend to notice! but if your dog is chipped and registered it could do not harm to ask them. Have you also checked with KAR just in case she has been found and reported to them. I am afraid caring for strays can be a difficult expensive and stressful excercise these days, and they cant be let out unattended with the additional risks of poison and traffic. I sympathise with your distress at the loss of Lucy and hope she turns up safe and well.

Neutered (or even entire) bitches can wear a disc saying "I am neutered" in both languages as a deterrent to theft.

How sad about Lucy. Has Genghis the Springer been found? It does seem that the so-called "hunters" are to blame. These people are pigs with no respect or feeling for any life form. Actually, no, pigs are much nicer creatures.

Well RR . Petronemma and all others concerned, you may have read my posts. Our pointer/vizsla girl has been gone over a week and we have had the trauma of witnessing a small pointer girl go missing
A moderator has deleted some of my posts as he has a right do do, because I am hot headed about this and tend to tell the truth. One or two people on here do not want to see the truth, therefore they report me. I think I make them uncomfortable because they only want to swap recipes. I await being barred, it will not be a huge loss
My missing girl is chipped and has a collar, but we now think she must have been poisoned
She was a dumped hunting dog when she first came, probably gun shy and is neutered. I think a hunter would know where to find the Spey scar
Petronemma, I am going to KAR at Lambousa with a photo and I know a lot of people associated with them that ~I really do not feel she is there but Kar is so far away and surely no one would take her there
I have been told that Lapta Belediyse would not bother checking a chip, they just kill them and dump them in the mountains, because like the police they are extremely lazy and do not care about animals
Petronemma it might be worth you speaking to Kar tomorrow at Lambousa, we are looking out for Lucy too but what else can we do?????

Yes surfmeetseast: I have read your posts(including the deleted ones) and I find them distressing , but so far I have sat on my hands to stop replying because I can see you are under a lot of stress and very upset - if you read mine you will see I have also gone through the trauma of a missing pet - I have also sat up all night watching another dog dying of poison AND in the course of a long life I have had the heartbreak of having to make the decision to have two beloved dogs put down because they were suffering from inoperable cancer. At the moment I am caring (along with he other two)for a l9 year old dog and wondering if I am doing to kind thing keepig her alive and never saying goodnight to her without wondering if she will be alive in the morning and unable to leave the house for more than an hour or two.. There is a poem by Kipling which I mean to put on the Board when I have time "Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware of giving your heart to a dog to tear" about how much you miss a dog when you lose it.

So I CAN understand how unhappy and bitter you feel. But I would hate to see you get into trouble because of the way you expressed your hurt. Remember you said you had to be strong - and you must be so you can care for the two and four legged who need you. I agree that is it possible that hunters were responsible for the two lost dogs and that the presence of a man with a dog trailer at the time a stray dog appeared is suspicious - but it is not proof.

Unless a reliable witness actually saw the man throw the abandoned dog out and drive away, I cannot see what the Police or Beledyi
can do about it - and the same would apply in the UK - the rule of "innocent until proved guilty" applies and they cannot arrest, let alone charge and punish - him without reasonable proof of guilt. It wont help get cooperation to attack the people you have to live with, even if some of them have different cultural attitudes to animals, nor to tar everyone with the same brush.

PS I dont expect the missing dogs are at KAR, but I understand they do keep a list of dogs reported to them missing or found and not everyone reads this forum or goes on Facebook.

Thank you all for your replies.

I will contact KAR and enquire as to whether Lucy has been taken there or reported to them, everything is worth a try and so far I have tried everything else and running out of ideas. I am trying to stay strong in the hope that she will turn up, but it is heartbreaking to know she is out there somewhere either wandering around potentially at huge risk, stolen, or dead the same with all the missing dogs. I have never seen a poisoned dog and i really don't want to either, it worries me that each time I search that this could be a possibility how people can be so cruel to do such a thing then i really don't know (to be honest i can't print what i think about those types of so called humans)

Surfmeetseast I totally understand your frustration, i also just heard from another person that the belediye just round up dogs and destroy them regardless of chipped or not i have been going out in search of not only my dog, but with a view to find other dogs that have been reported missing, including your dog too. I have also been thinking about Ghengis, it is saddening to think that there is little we can do. It seems regardless of neutering or microchipping, if a dog is stolen or missing, unless its found and taken to safety we will never know their whereabouts unless the chip can magically transmit the location of the dog.

Praying for a safe return of all our animals and all those missing.
