Just stopped into Gul Pastanesi for a loaf of fresh granary.

Plenty of other breads and cakes available, plus coffee and cheese boards fro an afternoon gathering of friends, wine also coming soon.

Premises only officially opening today, and well worth a look when you are passing.

Opposite 'Wines of the World' on the row of shops with Home Essentials.

Do they actually sell Gül bread? I was devastated when it left all the supermarket shelves because their Corn bread was the real thing and no-one else seems to produce it and yes, their Granary was the real deal as well!!

We love the Gül 50/50... and can't find it on any of the shelves that used to sell it... Such a shame Şah, Supreme, Tempo none of them seem to stock it any longer - I'm really disappointed with Şah on this score...

Groucho, hopefully this is the same bakery and they have decided to do their own thing and cut out the middleman. I shall certainly be calling in to check it out.

This is actually the Gul bakery I was told by them a while ago that they were moving premises and they did put a sticker on the loaves of bread saying that they would not be in production for 2 weeks (!!) as they were moving. Took a bit longer but they are actually done now.

The bread should be back in the supermarkets very soon

Sue

This bread does seem to have a chequered history.

I first found it for sale at Lambousa market and loved their teacakes for toasting and soft white rolls. Then the Lambousa stall disappeared and the bread appeared at Lemar initially and then at other markets - including the teacakes and soft white rolls. My 2 favourites then disappeared and other loaves appeared - which recently all disappeared.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Don't think the bread will be back in the supermarkets, it seems they were many months in paying, will be supplied directly from the shop, freshly baked every day.

It is the Gul bread.

Great place to stop for a coffee and a cake too whilst collecting the bread on the way home from shopping.

Have just come back from the GÜL Bakery. He's had to be up and running before he expected to be up and running because of demand. Shelves are mostly empty and the outside signs are only in the process of being constructed!! He's decided to cut out the middleman because as B24001 says, he was sick of having to wait 5 months or more to get paid by the Supermarkets. They are also stocking a large selection of NATURATA products, which, for those of you who don't know are "spelt" i.e. wheat and gluten free, plus organic rices that I've never seen before. His Ciabata breads look and smell absolutely amazing as well. He'll be in the bakery at the rear and the shop/deli in the front, although you can see the baking taking place. I have also spoken to someone at Lemar today who confirmed that he stopped supplying because of length of time it took to be paid.

Yesterday, as a special treat, we had 2 donuts, one each, --the best we have ever had since childhood. Absolutely delicious. Today I am buying their fresh, corn bread, which was still in the oven when we called an hour ago. Looking forward to it.

For reasons given above, he said he would not be supplying anyone else, only from his own shop and bakery. However he might change his mind, you never know, particularly if the demand grows. Completely agree re the bread.

My favourite new business! Only open a week and just keeps getting better and better!

The quality and variety of breads takes some beating and today a beautiful display of small and large cakes and pastries.

I believe the owner/baker is planning to do Xmas cakes etc later in the year.

What a great guy he is. He must be really chuffed in being able to say "yaboooo sucks to you" (or the equivalent in Turkish) to the Supermarkets. It'll be queues to get in at this rate.

So glad this is in Alsancak otherwise I would be the size of a house. On the way back to Esentepe from Lapta this morning we bought a large Ciabatta loaf, cheesecake and a wholemeal loaf. Ciabatta loaf has been polished off, it was too good not to finish in one sitting. Cheesecake for a treat tonight
