TRNC Driving License

Today I was pulled up by the Police in Esentepe in my Turkish Car. I was told my English Driving License was not valid here as I was driving a Turkish Car and the only vehicle you could drive on a English License was a hire car. As I had thought that you could drive for 90 days here on a English License it was a big shock, so will be off to obtain a TRNC License tomorrow. Checked this out with a Cypriot friend who confirmed the police are right and it has been this way for approximately 3 years.
Just a helpful message to other "Swallows" who come and go and drive on their English license to be aware of this. Seemingly you have no Insurance without the relevant license.

You will need photographs and some other documents, see
http://www.brstrnc.com/index.php/lifest ... rth-cyprus for more information. Looks like if you don't have a visitor's residency stamp in your passport, you will have to provide a Muhtar's letter instead.

No action that I know about, they told me to get a license today and go to the Police Station in Girne after I had applied. I had to say they were very polite.

The traffic department in Girne will need to see your receipt for your application in Lefcosia as this is your "license" until you get your photo licence.

Does this law apply to Greek Cypriots driving their cars and coaches here?

MikeK, only if they "reside" here for more than 90 days or if they own a TRNC registered car.

How would it affect lending our cars to visitors when they come out for a holiday? Would they be able to get away with their countries licenses?

Just checked with my insurance company Can Sigorta who confirm this is not true. You can drive for 90 days on UK licence. If you exceed that, then you need TRNC licenec.

The easiest way to get your licence is to go to a driving school and ask them they will do it all for you for a minimum sum. The driving school in Karacum is owned by a Turkish Cypriot who has excellent English and could not be more helpful. Did mine for me two years ago totally painless and saved hunting down the office in Lefkosia. Is now guiding me through selling my car, has provided the necessary document and filled it all in for me and will do the same for the buyer and guide them through their part of the process.
