I have been trawling through old posts (unsuccessfully) trying to find out which building society people use to get access money via atm machines for free. I am sure I have read this somewhere on here

Can anyone advise please?

Nationwide do not charge me if I draw sterling out of an atm here but I think you do need the right kind of nationwide account for this to be true.

We are currently looking to move to TRNC and I have just sat down for one and three quarters of an hour with a Nationwide account advisor and just opened a FlexPlus account - this account allows you to draw via a Visa Debit card up to £500 a day in sterling at no charge - if you use the card for shop/store purchases then there will be a charge.

I must admit I did trawl this forum before deciding who to open an account with Nationwide - some excellent advice on here but please remember this is only my opinion and does not in any way meant to give you financial advice.

The reason we opened this account is because we are currently with Barclays and they are going through some pretty big changes at the moment re Expats.

Norwich and Peterborough Classic Account

Pretty sure they dont charge for withdrawals overseas.

Think you have to have a balance of £5000 in the account or have £500 paid into the account each month...if not then there is a charge ....£5.

DenBoy, Nationwide is the way to go, been here 8 years without a problem with them - apart from getting replacement debit cards but that is another story - no charge for £500.00 per day (if you have it) and no charge if you use your credit or debit card in the South PROVIDING you state you want your transaction in Sterling not Euro's. Welcome to our world.

We only have the standard - no monthly charge - Flex Account.

As far as I know, Nationwide's basic 'flex' account doesn't charge for cash withdrawals of Sterling but does charge for TL withdrawals.

Nationwide 'Select' credit card doesn't charge for purchases in shops in any currency but does for ATM withdrawals, be it sterling or TL

It's new, things change all the time, I have the same as you but went on my internet banking this morning and this message appears:

FlexPlus You could get our packaged current account with a range of benefits for you and your family. Plus 3% AER (2.96% gross p.a.) variable interest on balances up to £2,500. All for £10 a month.

I also have had Flex account for years and no monthly charge I get free travel insurance and can take GBP from ATM no charge, Flex Plus is a new account and you pay £10 a month with extra benefits. I also have a credit card with my account no charge for purchases but will be charged for ATM withdrawals either TL or GBP, I pay my Hotel bill in GBP and no charges are added.

Standard Nationwide flex account DOES now charge for cash withdrawals in foreign currency and purchases, and has done for the last couple of years or so, it never used to but now it does. There are also now two other versions of a flex account, the flex direct, and flex plus.

If you are relinquishing your UK home for permanent life abroad
Have two or three different uK bank accounts because :-
1 Outages like RBS Nat West Ultster Halifax LLoyds Barclays HSBC Nationwide Clydesdale have all failed on systems and can leave you without funds temporarily
2 Banks act unilaterally and close accounts to foreign residents Barclays as an example

You must attempt to future proof yourself money can always be moved between Banks and accounts on the internet

Never use your prime account in cash machines or for regular payments or chip and pin machines
i.e wages/pensions into one account use credit card for payment or if cash use another current account card for payments top up on internet transfers from the main account .Imagine what happens if your main account is hacked trying to sort it from abroad and your income is going into that account and no access
Hope this helps

I have used Nationwide for years, and all of the time of being in NCyprus luckily without any problems. Nationwide Flex Account (not Flex Plus) does NOT charge to take Sterling out of ATMs, but yes, there is a charge for taking money out in Turkish Lira, and presumably any other foreign monies.
The Flex Account Plus has an annual charge of £10 and allows more to be taken out in Sterling than the plain Flex A/c.
