Tatlisu - Secret Dog Compound !

I had a very disturbing phone call late this afternoon and I have been thinking about it ever since, not knowing what action to take .
This is what I have decided, to appeal to my fellow members of Kibkom for help and advice or not!
Suzan the owner of K9 Kennels rang me at her wits end about four of the Famous Five, that she has had to take in again as it did not work out with the Lady who had tried to rehome all five.
Suzan cannot carry on caring for them and someone had suggested that Tatlitsu Belediyesi had their own dog compound, so she went and enquired about it today.
She was given directions, near to the roundabout and Yamans Restaurant ( I may have got the spelling wrong), so obviously went to see for herself what it would be like to put the four dogs into care there.
What she was met with was simply appalling! No one there, maybe twelve dogs in different stages of neglect. No food. this is provided once a week from the left overs of local restaurants and put down in a heap, so the strongest get some and the weakest don't. Filth everywhere. No clean water or shelter ! Absolutely heartbreaking conditions for any animal.
What Suzan would like to do is get as many people from the area to help her go in and clean, even if it is just
once a week and provide food to the animals that have been put in there and forgotten about!
It seems this is the way forward, each district is going to pick up the stray, dumped or lost animals. Caring for them is another matter !
Please! I have not appealed for help on here to raise arguments, to cause people to have a go at each other or any other unpleasantness. I have simply put down what I believe to be true after listening to Suzan and hearing her genuine concerns.
Can anyone living nearby help her help these poor souls ?

OMG I know the dogs here get a rough deal & Tatlisu is an area I have an apartment & if this going on in an area I love I am horrified. I would like to think that the people I know over there will try to find out what is going on.

BBB's other half I have posted this on the management company of the site I have an apartment, also the social site, & owners site & Hope4Pets. I have an apartment on Sea Terra Reserve, Tatlisu & am appalled to read this, especially as the site support the schools in Tatlisu.
From UK it is very difficult to do things, but I have done all I can think of to bring this atrocious situation to as many people I can think of.

Let's just hope now people are going to know that this is here, basic conditions can be improved and regular feeding given to the dogs.
It was admitted that there was no money for food for the dogs and if the restaurants could not give them their waste, nothing!
If anyone could go and see for themselves and post back, this I am sure would be appreciated by most of us on the Forum.

This is so appalling, is there a way someone could take photos/video and put it on say, Facebook or better still, get it to Pres. Akinci somehow - the local Belediye needs to be shamed into doing what they are supposed to do, ie feed, look after and try to rehome them.

This is another from Maria & she is involved with H4P but her husband is poorly so cannot get too involved

Please all go to a vet near you, go to all the Vets reporting you concerns and what you know ask them to contact the head of Vets association ask for the number, make sure all do this in the coming week.

Please help these poor dogs, if they are to be confined then their basic needs water/food must be met if not then leave them to roam.

Cally. I believe you have got Suzan's number now and can pass it on to whoever is offering help.
I agree, that pictures need to be taken and given to the right people who can get them published and brought out into public view and also that the Belediyesi should be reported to the relevant authority for not carrying out the rules and law of looking after these animals.
My hands are tied now a little as I am not a member of the group that has become involved but I am just thankful that something is being done to try and help these poor animals and future ones that would have been put in there.

TBH BBB's other half I don't believe any one group has taken responsibility for these dogs, Suzan is willing to clean up their compound & another has volunteered to help. Maria recommended that the vets in the area are informed & with pictures again (they don't lie) to maybe shame the belediyesi into taking responsibility for what they have created. If Suzan hadn't visited goodness knows how much longer these poor dogs would have survived.

If anyone is prepared to help these poor animals in any way, be it giving regular food, helping to keep the dismal conditions they are being kept in at least cleaner for them, providing them with a little bit of comfort ( Old blankets, towels etc. that could provide warmth for bedding) or just letting others know what is happening to them, shaming if that is possible the authorities into improving at least the standard of care of these neglected souls. - Suzan's Number is 0533 8833366, I have her permission to post this and she is desperate for help!

Cally - As Suzan had posted herself on a FB page, I thought members of that page were already in contact with her!- Misunderstanding!

This is the biggest problem logistically Surfmeetseast that they are so far east. I have posted the dilemma on the owners of the site where I have an apartment (Tatlisu) but there are not a lot live there permanently. If we can make the lives of these poor souls a little easier it can only be good.
I am so sorry your missing dog has not returned, it is even worse when you don't know what has become of them.

Bless you for your thoughts, Cally! We used the K9 kennels when we were still coming back and forth. They were great. took 3 dogs and a pup into their family kennel.They knew our 2 oldest dogs who had previosly been adopted by the owners who had lived in Tatlisu before The location though was such a long drive for us
It is not about having problems with people or how they run things or how it is not working. We need to all join hands and try to help
I have no emotional resources left, and only enough financial to feed our own. I cried for the first time last night, bucketsof tearsfor my girl who ~I think will not be coming home now, its 3 weeks but I will not be driven away

Surfmeetseast - Please do not give up and to shed tears for a loved one is the most natural thing to do. I have shed buckets full in the past and know that there will be more in the future.
We love our animals because they become part of our Family, full stop. If only more out here would feel as we do, life for the dogs and cats would be so different.
I can try and be the go between for anyone who wants to help the poor souls of Tatlisu because they do need help urgently.

I have a horrible feeling that this could also be the case in other areas.

Could we find out where the so called dog shelters are in other areas and take our photos and take the lot to the government veterinarian?

I would rather see all the dogs euthanised before allowing them to be held in such atrocious conditions

Sue, I have asked somebody who is near the Tatlisu "compound" for pictures. I am in UK so it is very frustrating but I am doing all I can to help these poor souls. TBH I am beginning to come round to your way of thinking, these dogs are confined then not even fed & watered on a regular so what sort of a life is it for them.

Is there anyone who lives nearer to Tatlitsu - Esentepe or other villages - that could possibly go and take some pictures of where these dogs have been put? I could then try and get these published in both the English and Cypriot papers. Also does anyone know of a Vet that way who would go in and check on these animals.? Some could be needing medical attention asap.
If there is nothing wrong with the conditions and regular feeding programs are in place, we will be not upsetting anyone but I really think we cannot let this just be passed on! How the place was described, it must be a living hell for these poor souls

There is still the future of four of The Famous Five to try and help with, I hope the original owners who dumped them are finding their new life in the south ''difficult'' to say the least

BBB - I would absolutely love to foster one of these famous 4 - out of 5 but I am scared to for the following reason.

We have known many instances where people have fostered dogs/puppies and then cannot return them whilst they leave the country for medical or other reasons.

If we lived here all the year round there would be no question - we would have a couple of dogs and cats, as it is, we have to leave every summer for health reasons and it would be unfair to ask our friends to look after animals for such a long period.

This does not mean we do not want to help in other ways. We support KAR as much as possible, although we shuddered when we first heard that the Beles were going to take over the dog problem and that KAR had bowed out.

We knew what would happen, these people must have no souls when they can cause this amount of suffering, the animals were better on the streets than kept like this. Better to euthanise them humanely than this treatment.

How awful - poor dogs. Surely this is not how the beledere's compounds are going to be run under the new law - take them off the street - cage them up until they die (however that may be)!!! - a case of out of sight out of mind !!! How many more of these places are there ... i read of the one in Guzelyurt on fb and someone was going to the press and authorities with the photos - not heard anymore.
As to humanely putting them down - i am sure on an old thread or FB it was said that they cannot even get the proper "humane" medicine here to do that. The ones they use are not considered "humane" in other countries. I think the private vets get their own from outside TRNC - but i could be wrong. There are only certain situations, here, when it is legal for the vets to put them down - just because they have no food or are stray or are emaciated and are suffering because of this is not one of the situations.
And they say the TRNC want to comply with EU regs and aim at joining the EU ---don't think so ! It is all just so awful - poor poor dogs.
They would be better off living their lives on the streets, neutered so they don't multiply, than what has been described on here.

Sue - I understand your concerns in fostering a dog and you are right, it can happen that you are left with the dog or cat.
If you help in other ways at least you are 'doing your bit' for them.
I have just heard that the Mayor of Tatlitsu is going to be shown pictures of the dogs and the conditions they are existing in and I have been assured that he is a good man who cares about his village. If he will make sure living standards are improved, a vet is called in and that regular food and water are given to the dogs we cannot do a lot more other than hands on help in cleaning etc and keeping an eye out for the poor dogs. If volunteers from the area can do this - brilliant We could try and give food for them, as well.

Maybe I am hoping for too much here - I will post later if I hear anything.

An update for those that have shown an interest in the plight of these poor dogs, sadly not many of us. They have been fed & a clean up is planned. I have no news on any visit by Muhter or any photos, not being over there myself I am not in a position to take any, not that I know how to put them on here

Further update

There is a meeting with somebody high up in Belediye who will be asked about a vet check & for them & any volunteers willing to go & help clean. All positive so far......If anyone can help with food it will be very much appreciated as they only seem to receive scraps...if any from restaurants. I know somebody has volunteered a drop off point for donations but can't remember who but think it was DVD shop Catalkoy, I'm sure I will be corrected if wrong. Thank you

I am still waiting for any more news on this situation but in the meantime at least something positive has come out of it, however small. Any improvement in the living conditions and lives of these poor dogs has got to be good.
It is the DVD Shop in Catalkoy that has kindly offered to take in donations. They are situated on the main coast road next door to Altay the Vet.
I just hope and pray that the local Beledeyesi, the Mayor of Tatlisu and whoever else with some clout can and will HELP these poor dogs and any future ones that are picked up and deposited there.
I repeat, if anyone living in the area or near to it could volunteer to spend an hour helping the dogs - I would love you for ever!

A Secret No More!

KAR have posted on the forum about this - please read their post!

We are still looking for regular donations of food, bedding and also to try and persuade a Vet to go in and check on the animals.
What has been revealed is how long this ''Secret'' Dog Compound has been up and running.

Thank you to Suzan, who was first on the scene and who did not just turn away from these poor animals.
Still a long way to go for them but maybe now they do have a safer future.

Still in a pretty desperate place, sadly.
They have had to be fetched back from the Lady who had originally tried her very best to rehome them all
The poor dogs must be so confused and I would imagine depressed.
It is not the best solution for any dog to have to be kept in a pound but they cannot stay at the kennels indefinitely.
To be abandoned by their owners Mr and Mrs. Peter Hogan in the first place ( I am sorry but I think these people are despicable for what they have done!), to be left at the kennels, then to be taken to another home with the Lady and her own dogs , then back to the kennels.
What now for them - pour souls!
There has been good come from all this in so much this ''Secret'' pound was found out about but it is not giving a Happy Ending for the now Famous Four!

if this is about the ''Secret'' pound, I think people need to see for themselves the conditions there and how these poor animals have been existing,

Absolutely barbaric. Poor dogs forced to eat dead dogs as they are starving. Hang your head in shame 'Mayor????' (I thought this title was supposed to be given to an honourable person who is an example to others, obviously not in this case.
Hayri Orcan Mayor of Tatlisu has also banned volunteers from going to help these poor wretched dogs. Words fail me.

A water tanker has been up to the shelter and anyone wanting to go tomorrow to help can meet Suzan. If coming from Esentepe rd turn left to Tatlisu down on your right is a market she can meet you at 11:30 am

Please everyone and anyone who can, join Suzan tomorrow to try and help these poor lost souls.
I am working at The Hut for the NCCCT but I will be with you in heart and mind.
What has gone on before we cannot change but we can help change the present and the future of these poor animals.
There is no excuse on earth for the conditions these dogs have been incarcerated in and how they have been so inhumanely treated.
I have messaged the Mayor of Girne, whose meeting I attended about the new dog compound to be built above the GAU just outside Girne and asked him to look and read about this atrocity of a pound so close to home and I will be looking forward to hearing his comments, if I get a reply!
Will it be a case of ''sticking together'' I do hope not because I got the impression from the Girne meeting that all concerned in this new compound actually cared for the welfare of the dogs here.
Maybe if they can help to improve and guarantee humane care and conditions for these animals people will start believing and trusting in what they are proposing to do.

need to know and see for themselves what is happening to the animals under the so called care of local Belediyesi.
The Citizens of North Cyprus have to be made aware of the atrocious acts of neglect that has been taking place as they are the Voters in this country and their voices will mean a lot.

I was unable to attend the 11.30 gathering due to a prior commitment, however I was at the pound at 09.30 to see for myself. Directions - at the Tatlisu roundabout, turn left towards the sea with the Alpet garage on the left and the Carob Tree pub on your right. Drive towards the sea, past the mosque on the left and shop on the right. At the T Junction, turn right. Yaman Restaurant on the left, approx 800 metres further on there is a Cyprus University sign on the right and a Tatlisu Belidiye sign/building. Park here. On the left is an old tarmaced road with a locked gated barrier. Fear not. To the left is a field, enter it and keep to the right hand fence which runs adjacent to the locked off road. Soon you will come to one of many broken sections of fencing, pass through and onto the road heading towards the sea. The road turns right, then left. You will be amongst a host of derelict buildings. The pound is on the right across a small courtyard like structure. The dogs will announce their presence as you approach. Having peered through a glass-less window, I saw 2 separated compounds with dogs in both on concrete, faeces spattered floors, no noticeable feeding bowls, fresh drinking water and no bedding/protection from the floor. I assume there is no running water to wash the floor or the dogs. I shall do no more until the Mayoral problem is resolved.

They certainly knew how to keep this prison secret.

Any contributions be it food or anything that can be used for bedding will make this hell hole more like 5* after all they have endured. Pallets of any condition would be great & if nails could be removed, fantastic, old sun loungers, mattresses for loungers. For those on sites maybe any old loungers/mattresses that may be renewed next year. If you can bear with me we will get it collected or find a drop off point.

I dont want to butt in when unfortunately there is no way I can help - I couldnt even get there . How many dogs are there? I think fabric will get filthy very quickly and worse become infested and help spread parasites - also soaked through in rainy weather. Why not collect some cardboard boxes (shop and supermarkets throw out hundreds) so they can be burnt and replaced as necessary. I have used them successfully as emergency dog boxes (although admittedly floored with old carpet but that was only one or two dogs which had been wormed and parasite treated) - and the dogs couldn't tell the difference from expensive but equally fragile shop bought, Then each dog can have its own space . They can be stood on their sides or holes cut for the smaller animals. Even be painted or covered with waterpoofing. Also timber packing cases but do be careful with anything but be careful about paint and manufactured materials like fibreglass which might cause terrible damage if chewed and swallowed.

I forgot to add, I think it is between 10-12 dogs, no idea how many have lost their lives being incarcerated there

Thanks Cally, I hope it helps. Dogs do love something they can curl up in - one of mine actually preferred a small cardboard box to his own roomy and rather expensive basket! And of course he chewed both of them - at least cardboard is easiler replaced! You can also use newspaper as lining and warmth insulation: but you may need to make arrangements with the authorities for safe burning of paper and card (easier this time of year) but it also goes to cleaning up the country!

Another idea is to ask if anyone has surplus olive oil (perhaps last year's) to donate it (or any type of veg oil, but olive is best): a spoonful added to their food will supplement an inevitably unbalanced diet, and help towards a healthy coat, which is nature's best way of protecting a dog from cold and wet. And ask restaurants to save old oil that has had meat fried in it (I think another animal charity is doing this elsewhere) Mine get the dregs from the frying pan added to their meal mopped up onto bread and they love it,and have healthy coats.

Cally: I have not lived as long as I have without having a few tips to pass on to the young whippersnappers! Actually I have taken in six strays (three still with me) since I have been here, and in the old days the expat community were less afffluent but more supportive, so I got a lot of tips about keeping dogs on a small budget. The dogs dont care about keeping up appearances - what most of them really want is a human of their own to love and care for them, but sadly there are not enough humans here for the stray population. All we can hope to give these particularly unfortunates is a little relief for their suffering, without upsetting the "power that be".

Thank you for passing on to Facebook - I really dont want to go on it - so I am very grateful to you for passing my suggestions on. Sadly my own health problems plus the demands of the current three little rascals (one of whom is old and ailing) prevent me going to see for myself , let alone do anything.

Just to elaborate on my earlier post: Dogs that are bored and/or under stress tend to chew their bedding and anything else available (like shoes!) so do puppies (and all young animal including human!) It is important to avoid using anything that could be harmful if swallowed - like foam rubber and fibreglass .

Even timber is a bit of a risk because it splinters, but sometimes you have to balance risk against benefits.

RR- young I am not but always willing to learn, somebody did mention with the boxes that even if they are flattened & they lie on them at least it takes them off the unforgiving concrete. I pointed out that if they chewed them up & played with them it could be classed as play, something they will not be familiar with.

Yes, it would be nice to hear what, if any, progress has been made. Also (particularly in view of another thread about increased charges for neutering animals) whether there was any response to the appeal to the Veterinary Association. Not all of us are on Facebook - could someone who is be kind enough to let us know if anything new and pertinent has appeared there.

PS Following up the cardboard box idea I noticed this morning that by the exit road from Şah supermarket there are a number of enclosures for recyclable items and one held a lot of carboard boxes: perhaps Şah would let those be used for a good purpose?
