Hunting Today?

Was awakened by a volley of gunshots at 6am. Thought the Greeks had invaded! Haven't seen anything in the press about hunting starting today or is it just a group of the locals having a day out assassinating the wildlife. If the season has started - does anyone know when it will end? Can't be soon enough for me.

Last year it was Wednesdays and Sundays for 10 weeks. They are sniffing around kayalar, I am looking at their dogs to see if I can spot any missing ones. Big brave men.......

They are sat on our land this morning having their breakfast,some of the more sensible ones I think, They had bagged a few Pigeons to eat. That's fine in my book, we kill animals for food. Also they are hoping to get a few rabbits, also to eat. If they keep it sensible then no problem.

But of course I suppose as with many things the minority will get the majority a bad name.

Thank you surfmeetseast for looking out for all the missing dogs. My Daughter and family have all been out again today looking for Lucy, with no luck whatsoever. Really hope they all turn up safe and well really soon!

We have found them to be helpful and they helped us to look for our dog in their 4x4 . I think we should accept the traditions and not try to change it. It was big in the US , and from what I gather also the UK. Considering a massive percentage of all local men own shotguns, there are very few gun related problems here.

Agree with Johnnie and Angie, I have met a couple of hunters who have been sensible and helpful on the surface ( not trusting anyone these days) some of them work for our Belediyse and have offered to look out for the several dogs that are missing
I am taking photos now, up here, in case we have other dogs dumped
I have no issue with the Bear Grills style of eating what you kill, but i resent the 'WE' Johnnie, because I do not eat meat fish or dairy. I really do not want to sound arrogant, or argue but I would no more eat an animal than I would a baby, with all of the secretions and blood etc, its horses for courses

Not wishing to cause a huge debate, but:

1. If humans were not meant to be carnivores we would not have the set of teeth that we have.....

2. Do vegetables not deserve to be treated humanely.....like, is it ok to rip them up from the roots and toss them into a pan of boiling water.....just saying.....obviously....yes horses for courses....

interesting though that it is usually veggies that have a point to make.....stop going on about your preferences...WE meateaters dont!

Simple answer, dont look at the posts
No vegs do not scream, this is the most trite and common defence ever said , for years, to vegetarians

BTW if you are up on your Darwinism you will know that we descend from Apes, which are vegetarian and do not have meat tearing teeth

Some scientific research (reported here and here) claims that plants do experience pain and emit signals (warning/distress).
Meanwhile, true followers of "Darwinism" frequently and justifiably rage at this so frequently stated misquote.
We (Homo sapiens) do not and have not descended (at least genetically) from apes (Hominidae) - evidence supports the current belief that Homo Sapiens, Hominidae and several other genera (some now extinct) shared a common ancestor, thus making us cousins to the apes rather than children...
As to behaviour, both individual and racial, I suspect apes would be most offended by the claims that we had descended from them....

Sustainable hunting of non-endangered species to put food on the table is to be encouraged as an alternative to the wholesale extermination of species on an industrial scale... Want as we might, we are never going to stop hunting - so better that it is done sensibly. I don't know about you but we notice that there is far less hunting activity these days i.e. over the last 10 years.

It used to be like the wild-west around Esentepe...

The Hunting Federation have been keen to improve their image, stamp-out poor hunting practices (killing of the wrong species at the wrong time of year, over-hunting, illegal hunting by unregistered guns etc etc.)

Hopefully that is true Groucho. I have met one or two. I was unable to contact anyone on the hunting fed line though, when trying to report a sighting of a hunter dumping dogs. I tied my best turkish (eek) but they just hung up
Its not about the food that upsets me the most, its the dumping of the dogs that do not come up to their needs

Saturay's CT has a report that environmentalist have called for the Gvt. to review hunting policy because:

"they claim the TRNC is unsuitable for gun sport because of increased commercialisation and development which leave smaller pocket of countryside for an already decreasing wildlife populations"

and

"demand all environmental protectin areas are close to hunting to allow the nature to exist in harmony with us."

Although I share the concern about hunting dogs, otherwise I am far more worried about effect the commercialisaiton and development which also leaves fewer pockets of countryside for human animals and I dont live in harmony with commercialisation and development! : Perhaps the hunters could find some new targets (Joke!)

Apparently the Interior and Labour Ministry have already reduced the number of huntings days.
