KAR discussions with Tatlisu re dog compound

Following a telephone call from a concerned member of the public today KAR has been involved in discussions about the Tatlisu dog compound.
There was a conversation between KAR and Tatlisu Baskan/Mayor Hayri Orcan.
The Mayor reports that the compound has been in existence for 2 - 3 years and has the capacity to house 20 dogs. Currently there are between 10 -15 dogs there. These are dogs that have been caught after roaming the area for some time.
The Mayor acknowledged that over the last few days there has been a problem in terms of cleaning and feeding. The compound has now been cleaned and tidied - he visited the compound himself very recently.
He admitted that feeding was sometimes a problem as they were reliant on local restaurant donations and sometimes it was not enough - he would welcome ANY food donations from other sources.
When questioned about medical treatment he admitted that no vets visited. Following further discussion he seemed to understand the need for a vet to attend. he has expressed concern as it appears there are no (or few) vets in the Tatlisu area but he will look into it.
KAR has invited the Mayor to visit KAR and it's Rescue centre in the hope that further discussions can take place and also that he (and Tatlisu staff) can see first hand how to care for, treat, manage and house large numbers of dogs. KAR hope that he will take up their offer so that the dogs in Tatlisu will benefit.
The Mayor is well aware that KAR, and concerned members of the public, may be watching the Tatlisu situation closely.

Thank you to KAR & the kind concerned member of the public to bring to their attention the plight of these confined dogs that were as a result not given their basic needs.
Hopefully that has now been resolved & they will now receive the necessary services of a vet if needed, as well as being watered they are going to rely to some extent on the generosity of animal lovers for food donations. The donation of any old towels, or any fabrics that can be used for bedding will be gratefully received. I will try & arrange a drop off point for these items.
There are now going to be a few dogs in a better situation than they were a few days ago.

If you are in the Catalkoy area the DVD shop & Pembe at Citizens bureau will accept donations, I am working on further East. Thank you

Cally, if you establish somewhere nearer, we'll happily contribute and see if neighbours will do likewise. Sadly, we are all owners of rescue dogs/strays already and cannot take on more. However, I am sure we can help with dog meal contributions and I'll ask my Cypriot neighbour if he can advise/help via other locals. I can confirm there are no vet facilities nearer Tatlisu than Catalkoy.

I have just seen this - absolutely brilliant news.
I cannot give enough thanks to all at KAR and everyone else that has softly, softly brought this about.
I am in Catalkoy and would willingly meet up with anyone wishing to donate towards the upkeep of these dogs if they live a distance away.
The dog compound of Tatlisu has most definitely been kept a Secret - thank God it is now out in the open and the animals will be receiving sufficient care, food and medical attention.

bbb, where is the pound in Tatlisu? I live within 15 minutes drive and visit the village for fresh drinking water weekly. If I knew the location, I would happily drop by and see what was needed/I could do then and there. I guess there is no tap/hose, brushes/shovels etc to clean the place of faeces/urine?

If you could do this - brilliant.
My original post about this ''secret'' compound came about after a phone call I had from Suzan of K9 Kennels.
She had found it after making subtle enquiries because she still has Four of the Famous Five with her and the situation is beyond desperate.
She said it was close to the roundabout and a restaurant called Yamans? or something similar.
The Mayor has said he would welcome any help and has even admitted to not being able to even feed the dogs properly and is asking for donations of food, so for you to offer to go and do what ever, I am sure you would be welcomed. I could ring Suzan tomorrow or if you wanted to speak to her directly?
I would like to be able to persuade a Vet to go in as well, as none of the dogs have been checked over for anything.
Just let me know what you want me to do.

This matter is getting better & better, being in UK is very difficult but I have been following very closely the plight of these poor dogs.
Tomsteel I am still trying to find somewhere nearer that would be willing to take in donations, would you be in a position to approach the new Tempo, bearing in mind how helpful Starling are in the West including making donations themselves they might want to do likewise.
I do understand that kind people like yourself who take in rescues are full to the rafters but any help with food/bedding & of course cleaning is going to make the lives of these unfortunates so much better.
Mind you we don't want to make it 5***** or everybody will want to come East

Cally, I will ask at Tempo and some local hosteleries in the area. However, even if they agree, how will it be collected, delivered and to who/when at the pound? The devil is always in the detail. Is there a point of contact in Tatlisu Beledeyi?

Couldn't agree more Ijarvo, I am not sure how many dogs from this compound have survived over these last 2-3 years but lets try & improve the conditions of the ones there at the moment and any thing that can be used for bedding will be gratefully received. If you can all hang onto whatever you may have at the moment I am trying to arrange drop off points & arrange delivery to the compound.
Thank you all so much for your support

I have had several private messages offering help in one way and another and for these special people - heartfelt thanks.
BBB is going to be over in Alsancak at the Hair of the Dog ( not for his haircut but our Joe Cocker).
He will be there from 9.00am till maybe 10.30am on Saturday morning.
If there is anyone of you living that way who wants to give anything for these poor animals maybe you could go to him there.
As a dog lover herself I am sure Aysel would not mind at all and would be more than happy to help.
Just an idea - to maybe get the ball rolling.
I could then find a way to get it over to Tatlisu, probably Sunday!
We must not relax on this one just because it is now out in the open although we cannot be seen to be interfering. We have to keep the local Belediyes and the Mayor happy and comfortable with the help we are offering and giving. With KAR now involved as well , I really think we stand a chance of making a difference for these poor animals.
As Cally said, how many dogs that have been in there over the 2-3 year period it has been running are still alive now?
We can try our hardest to make sure the ones there now at least are cared for, in a clean environment, fed and watered and if possible be able to have a little bit of love and comfort.

I am appealing to KAR for help !.
It has been posted on FB that Suzan has been refused entry to the pound and her offer of help to clean and check on the dogs has been refused by the Mayor Hayri Orcan.
She has been instructed to leave any donations of food at a builders yard near to the pound.
Is this a case of the individual not being welcomed but help still would be?
Could KAR negotiate with the Mayor on behalf of the animals.
There are some very disturbing photographs on the ErrenselGazete Com which I have asked to be posted on Kibkom. Unfortunately I do not have the no how to do it. There are pictures of the conditions these animals are living in, upsetting maybe but I believe need to be seen by as many people here as possible. We have to remember that the Mayor admitted this pound has been up and running for 2-3years so God knows what atrocious things have been happening to the dogs.
I am so upset that things seems to have taken a backward turn and we have got to get the Mayor and Belediyesi back on side. This is a very sensitive issue and maybe individuals have been to enthusiastic in their approach.
KAR with the clout you have and your knowledge of how things should be done here, can you help ?

Just seen the video - I am horrified. People in that area, can you not get up a 'posse' and threaten that man that you will go to President Akinci with this video if he doesn't do what he should??

From a concerned Kibkomer.......
I was unable to attend the 11.30 gathering due to a prior commitment, however I was at the pound at 09.30 to see for myself. Directions - at the Tatlisu roundabout, turn left towards the sea with the Alpet garage on the left and the Carob Tree pub on your right. Drive towards the sea, past the mosque on the left and shop on the right. At the T Junction, turn right. Yaman Restaurant on the left, approx 800 metres further on there is a Cyprus University sign on the right and a Tatlisu Belidiye sign/building. Park here. On the left is an old tarmaced road with a locked gated barrier. Fear not. To the left is a field, enter it and keep to the right hand fence which runs adjacent to the locked off road. Soon you will come to one of many broken sections of fencing, pass through and onto the road heading towards the sea. The road turns right, then left. You will be amongst a host of derelict buildings. The pound is on the right across a small courtyard like structure. The dogs will announce their presence as you approach. Having peered through a glass-less window, I saw 2 separated compounds with dogs in both on concrete, faeces spattered floors, no noticeable feeding bowls, fresh drinking water and no bedding/protection from the floor. I assume there is no running water to wash the floor or the dogs. I shall do no more until the Mayoral problem is resolved.
They have obviously made it very difficult to find...
