Unbelievable events on the south today. Elam youth protesting against the north and also attacking Turkish Cypriot cars. You can see on ktv the people affected by today's events. So much police about but still no safety if you are a tc. All these attacks and nothing ever gets done, no one is ever caught even if the assault is in front of a Greek Cypriot policeman. The people that were attacked today were told by the police wrong place at the wrong time. I say when will it ever be the right time. I believe that all these talks are for nothing while there is groups like Elam. This I just my view of the situation present and I do not believe that it will ever get any better. The funny thing the Cyprus south is an eu member and these kind of things ar allowed to happen.

Monday is a day when students have to spend all day at school, what were they doing out in the streets at 11.00 till 13.00.
Was it on the instruction of the teachers, or maybe the church.

Greek Cypriot high school students are among those blamed in vandal attacks on vehicles bearing Turkish Cypriots registration plates on Monday during a school-sanctioned demonstration against the breakaway regime in the north.

According to media reports, hundreds of young members of the extremist group ELAM, including high school students, threw rocks against Turkish Cypriot cars. In one instance, they broke a window and the driver was taken to hospital with light injuries.

Police told the Cyprus Weekly that vandals threw rocks or otherwise caused damages to Turkish Cypriot vehicles in three different incidents in Nicosia, one which resulted in an injury. Two reports have been officially filed with the police.

President Nicos Anastasiades issued a written statement immediately following the events, showing his disapproval and warning that the vandals’ actions are a threat to finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.

“This behaviour by fools against our Turkish Cypriot compatriots is unacceptable and condemnable,” said the President.

Anastasiades also made a comment about security guarantees, saying that those who call for guarantees to stay on in Cyprus will have a point.

“The state will not tolerate this kind of behaviours by isolated individuals or groups, who draw from their pseudo-patriotism and have as ultimate goal the lasting division of our homeland,” the president said.

Anastasiades expressed deep sadness towards Turkish Cypriots, pointing out that these actions do not reflect the feelings of the vast majority of Greek Cypriots who wish for a peace in a future reunited Cyprus.

The protest was scheduled for Monday, a day after the anniversary of the unilateral independence declaration of the breakaway regime in the north on 15 November 1983, which fell on a Sunday this year.

Prior to the events, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci had said that marking the anniversary of the declaration did not impede negotiations for reaching a federal settlement on the island.

No arrests have been made according to Police.

I would note that ELAM got 0.88% of the total votes in the 2103 presidential elections. They got 1.08% in the 2011 parliamentary elections. 2.69 in 2014 European elections.

I do sometimes wonder if the tyres on my car will still be inflated every time I park at The Mall or one of the other shopping centres on the Greek side. As usual, the Police make no arrests or charge anyone. If you've ever been in the middle of one of these mobs, with a young child in the back of the car, believe me, it's not a pleasant experience.

Ps didn't go South this weekend (busy watching the air display over Nicosia) as this was obviously going to happen, makes you wonder how a so-called Peace will ever materialise.

Not in our lifetime I think is the answer, to the original post.

Erol yes a very low vote percentage, so they are a minority. But what about the schools they are teaching this rubbish and hatered towards the Turkish Cypriots yet the ministers and government allow it to go on. What if the teachers were the ones that voted for this group, such a low percentage then theses teachers go on to teach there beliefs and ideas to the kids then will this make a difference. Then they become a larger percentage Or may be I am just stupid and should just accept what I am told that an agreement is around the corner, bend over and get stoned, I don't think so, if there is no equality there will never be a solution here in Cyprus.

Mrsgee me also I just can not see it happening with every thing to consider in the big picture of things to agree on. Always our safety is first I feel, or is it just me that feels this way. As over the past weeks on this forum this is never talked about. Over the years peace talks all the time to always come to a dead end the politicians have a nice time flying here and there, big dinners and fancy party's, extra cash for expenses. They do very well and people suffer in the hope of just a normal equal and free life within a civilised country.
