Bringing a car to the TRNC

This has probably been discussed before but ... We have been told by customs that to import our car it will cost us approx 5K. We were then told we could bring the car for 1 year but it must leave the TRNC after 1 year or incur these taxes.
Is it possible to buy a cheap car in the UK and drive it to the TRNC, have it for 1 year and then sell it in the TRNC or drive it over the border to ROC (Cyprus) where we have friends and sell it there ? I know the rules change here but anyone with sound advice about this subject please.

You will most likely have to pay taxes on it in the North, as any prospective buyer would not possible won't got buy the car, then have to pay the tax as well, not sure of the rules in the south, but good luck
Just a passing thought
I wanted to bring my car over, but the Tax was going to be between £18K - £20K, as you say the rules change like the wind, they based my calculation,on the year of the car and original Purchase value, the car was 4 years old,I sold it in the UK and used the money to buy here, but I didn't get anything like the Tax they wanted to charge me

I did bring our car over and having paid all the import taxes managed to get it registered. It is possible if expensive and time consuming. It used to be that you could bring in a UK registered car for up to 12 months or until the UK road tax ran out which ever was sooner, then it had to be imported and registered. Due to the lax ways of the TRNC in enforcing laws, at one time there were lots of UK reg cars being used by expats in NC for years. The NC authorities cottoned on and there was a sudden witch hunt for any UK reg car in NC. Many were simply seized and later 'sold' at auction or allegedly otherwise re distributed hence you rarely see a UK reg car nowadays. It didn't seem to matter how long they had actually been in NC. It used to be and may still be, that any car imported had to be less than 3 years old, RHD or if older you had to have owned it from new. If you do import a car and register it, you can't sell it for I think 3 years. You cannot sell or transfer a car in the TRNC that isn't registered or hasn't had all its TRNC taxes paid up to date whether import duties or the annual road tax.

My understanding is that if you are not resident here - which can be checked by your flights in/out, whether you have bought a house/rent and/or applied for residency - then you can drive on UK plates for (I thought) 9 months but you may be right about 1 year? You then have to remove the car from the country or import.
No one will buy a UK registered car and end up paying the huge import and registration charges themselves - that doesn't make any sense. Additionally, I think you will find that the car has to be less than 5 yrs old so you can't import a wreck.
Don't know anything about the rules down South.
There should be plenty of info on here if you search.
I think most people buy here. A cheapie will be about £2500
