Taken from an article in the NCFP

According to Diyalog newspaper (19.11.15) reports that Turkey had decided to close the penstock valves in Turkey’s Anamour dam stopping the flow of the water to the Gecitkoy dam in north Cyprus. It says that this is in response to the TRNC government’s refusal for the water to be administrated by Turkey. The 28 north Cyprus councils have formed the private company BESKI with the intention of running the water project locally. It is also rumoured that Turkey has decided to suspend investments in the TRNC.

According to LGC News:-

"Director of Turkey’s Water Affairs Department, responsible for the water project in North Cyprus, Birol Cinar, yesterday issued a written statement regarding the water supply from Turkey.

He denied that the Turkish water authorities had deliberately shut off the water supply to the recently built dam in Gecitkoy in the North as a means of coercing the North to agree to Turkey’s wish to manage the distribution of the water."

They say it is to test the new dam. Fill it up a bit, check for leaks, fill it a bit more etc. until they know it is safe.

Who in their right mind would handover a multi million dollar project to 28 councils who only want to make jobs for the cousins to get their snouts in the trough.

If as commentators suggest there will be some sort of settlement mid next year where does that leave the pipeline and more important what about Turkey's massive investment in it. ?

The GC Archbishop has said that he hopes we don't regret the water from Turkey and that he is not optimistic about the "peace" talks.
He went on to say "the Turks want everything, as long as the Turks see our properties as theirs there will not be a solution,it is time that those who were blinded by their belief in a settlement open their eyes and see the realities."
That's telling us then !

aedsrawray, Guess you have never heard of DII then? To answer your question with another: Who would be stupid enough to sign a blank contract that gave away all of the Military at home and abroad's IT and its supporting infrastructure to a consortium that was not even fully formed and had no money? Ever heard of the MOD? They would be the same people who repeatedly sold back to BT telephone systems that they had paid a fortune for and fixed the price at penny's!!! Its not just the TRNC - it is world wide.

waddo, naughty! Is that the same MOD that spent millions resurfacing the runway at an airbase near Doncaster to close it within 2 years and is now a housing estate or spent millions on a bespoke-fitted scanner for a military hospital near Swindon to close that establishment within 2 years? The military bases in Germany are yet another example of huge wasted finance. Rinteln Military Hospital refurbishment ring any bells?

Hi Waddo

I left the MOD in June 2014 after 43 years service, I could write a best seller on how the MOD have wasted money, with stories you would never believe, if the MOD was a Ltd company it would have gone bust a hundred times over,, there is no joint up thinking between one budget to the next, and how a cut in spending in one budget has a greater spend as it will effect another budget,
at work I had more passwords to keep than letters in the alphabet, for DII Unicom, JPA, James, MJDI,Tamas, the list goes on,

over the moon that is all behind me now,

Jimmy

Sorry to go back to the subject, but if C2D is to be believed (and a lot of the time it isn't) it says the water hasn't been turned off permanently, they are still testing the pipe for leaks and such. Pays your money and takes your choice.

Tomsteel - they also remade the runway at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay and not only did they close it very soon after but they sent all the aircraft ( Nimrods)to the scrap heat - many many millions down the drain.9

ardstrawray, I quite agree it was off topic - However, you did pose the question: Who in their right mind would handover a multi million dollar project to 28 councils who only want to make jobs for the cousins to get their snouts in the trough.

If you did not want an answer maybe you should have refrained from asking or at least made sure that readers understood that your comment was a joke and not meant as a dig against the TRNC?

It was not a joke and I was not digging anybody,I am just commenting as I see it, for example, airline went bust due to gross overmanning, building, developing, and legal system running out of control and they cannot even solve the stray dog problem, so I think the water is a project too far.

Just to update this - seems TRNC / Turkey have finally agreed and signed the agreement re the management of the water that comes to the North from Turkey via the pipeline suspended in the sea.
