Notice that the chevron signs, advising drivers to circulate clockwise, have been removed, leaving it to drivers choice. As often as not, vehicles are short cutting across the roundabout against the flow.
Only in TRNC.

This is normal here.
I once saw a driver going up to the Girna bypass roundabout, then instead of going right round, he did a U turn, going the wrong way round it, and set off back towards Alsancak, nearly hitting numerous drivers on the roundabout coming the correct way.
Its no wonder you see an accident nearly every day here!

I fear a lot of locals do not understand the rules for roundabouts......in fact, I think that the highway code principles here are completely different to elsewhere in the world.......the number of times we have had to slam on brakes whilst going around the one at the bottom of the Bellapais road, because some idiot just shoots straight out without even looking, and then when you blast the horn, they either still continue without a care in the world (obviously on a mission), or, glare at you as if you are in the wrong.........what exactly do they teach at the driving schools here.....apart from the art of using a mobile...

Yes,very true. Brit ex-pats are no better than the locals!

I can only speak of my own experience Becker......two days ago was the latest incident, young lad with young lady, left hand drive car, so may have been Turkish, or not, almost ended up on our bonnet at the bottom of the Bellapais road.......have not yet experienced the same lack of understanding of rules from ex pats, but maybe I will.

mrsgee,I was speaking in particular of Riverside roundabout Alsancak. We Brits are just as bad as locals. Made it worse with the great potholes where they have dug for new water main.

When I was last in Turkey (a while ago now) roundabouts worked in a completely different way - those entering from the left have right of way over those already on the roundabout. So Turks just arriving (or being forgetful) will probably just pull out expecting you to stop. Best to expect the unexpected here, I'm afraid.

Used to be the same system in Holland until they realised if you allow priority to those joining, the roundabout can get grid locked.

They changed the system about 25 years ago.

Turks probably still figuring it out.

Frontalman and Brianc,İt's not Turkish drıvers,but locals who choose not to go around the roundabout,because a bit quicker treating the roundabout as a waste of time,and doing a right turn.

They will need to dig it all up, plant loads of flowers and stick an illuminated fountain in the middle before they stop using it as a short cut.

I use this roundabout most days. It is the Brits swell as TCs and Turkish people. You can almost see them laughing as they do it. However, if an accident happens, they may not laugh quite so much. Contravening a traffic sign/law/regulation can null and void any insurance claim. Some Brits. found that out last year when they tried to do a U Turn on the motorway where it was not allowed and met with a large taxi. Both cars badly damaged. Case went to Court and both drivers had to pay up as the taxi was speeding, surprise, surprise!

So, just playing 'devils advocate' here, when people say they want to change things here they are told 'this is Cyprus' and they should fit in with how things are and have been for a long time, and when they do as is done by pretty much most of the indigenous they are told they should behave like they do in England.
