BRUSSELS, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Friday approved a new financial assistance program worth 32 million euros (35 million U.S. dollars) to support the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The Commissioner for Regional Policy of the EU Corina Cretu said the process of the reunification of the divided island of Cyprus should be facilitated through the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community.

"This is why we fund projects which contribute to bringing the two Cypriot communities closer together," she said.

Cretu added reconciliation and trust-building efforts will continue to be a strong component of the program through support to the bi-communal committee on cultural heritage and, for the first time, the rehabilitation of the buffer zone in the old town of Nicosia.

Since 2006, the EU has invested 400 million euros under the aid program for the Turkish Cypriot community to support the local economy, infrastructure and prepare the community to implement EU laws in connection with a reunification of Cyprus.

Now the big question - who is going to control and monitor this money as to where and on what it is spent?

Some stupid new EU regulation , inappropriate to conditions to the country in question which will just serve to make life more difficult for the genuine small and medium sized businessman already struggling to make a living in the light of previous stupid and inappropriate EU generated regulations and add to the cost to the consumer and already spiralling cost of living. If it affects individuals the Expat Brits will become all "holier than thou" about obeying regulations and the Cypriots will do their best to ignore it!

If the EU genuinely wanted a fair solution to the Cyprus problem and have money (ie our taxes) to burn, they should start a fund tohelp those who genuinely suffered or (as things look like turning out) will suffer from land redistribution and/or withdraw sanctions now so the TRNC can negotiate on a level playing field!

I know the ECO village Karpaz way has been funded partly by the EU.
For anyone who may be interested how do they find out what other EU funding is being spent in North Cyprus ?

More new BMW's for the police and government officials but still the tired old fire engines will continue to slog their weary way up the mountainsides carrying one single load of water! Money well spent?
