Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
Was he really guilty of these crimes as stated or was he set up as he has always said he was?

Re: Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
very surprised,Nadir volunteered to return to the UK "to face the music" so to speak, however,I thought he probably had done a deal so the the SFO could put the case to bed,if he had, then its back fired on him,I bet he didnt reckon on a custodial sentence.
I have read a book by his Management company's CEO,although she was obviously biased,it was written fairly, she said the whole episode was contrived by the SFO to justify their very existence,I am glad I didnt have any shares in PP at the time of his arrest!!.........small mercies and all that.

Was he guilty ? He does not appear to have shown any remorse for the victims nor has he done anything to share with the victims the wealth that he has retained, guilty or not. I have not seen anything about a restitution order. He knew where to put the money didn't he ! If an appeal fails he should serve the full 10 years or until he parts with all his material wealth. Evidently the prosecution costs exceeded 3 million.

Local coffee shop gossip/speculation, as reported by my TC hubby. 'It is political, they could not let him off as they would have had to pay him lots of money'. 'This way, they lock him up, he appeals, he pays them lots of millions, and walks free'. Sorted.

I thought it would be headlined in C2D but it isn't, however, the inside page makes interesting reading.

Re: Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
There is a BBC News programme "The Rise and Fall of Asil Nadir". Obviously prejudiced , but raises some interesting points. At the end I was still not sure about Mr. Nadir, but I was pretty certain the Serious Fraud Office were guilty of misconduct and I suspect there are so many cover ups in the UK it will be impossible for the real story ever to emerge.
Its available until 9th Sept. if you have access to BBC IPlayer. Under "R" in their alphabetical index."R" for "Rise " presumably - would not be easy to find if you were looking for it - I only did so by accident looking for something totally different.

Re: Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
The full story might come out at the end of the 50 year rule when papers are released to the public. At least most are. I notice in the local papers here that we were all supposed to go out and march and say when a wonderful man he was and how he had saved the TRNC and given employment to many. However I wonder just how the UK people feel who lost their pensions and many thousands more who invested and lost money in shares in PP. I haven't heard one word of sympathy for them. People in the TRNC have to understand it is not only them who suffered. Unfortunately they only seem to feel sorry for themselves.

Re: Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
Have to say I thought it a little odd that expats were asked to go along to march in protest, but is it not the case that we are not allowed to protest.....or is that just something that applies if we want to protest against the Government practices here....rather than those in the UK.....talk about a topsy turvy world.......anyway, I feel that there is more to this than meets the eye......SFO defo seem to have done something amiss at some point......maybe the truth will out, and Nadir will not be the bad lad he has been made out to be......

Re: Asil Nadia gets 10yrs
The BBc programme was biased...in the sense that if you don't understand the arguements from ALL SIDES - it made Asil look like a total crook!
The interview with him did nothing to put him in a good light! The defense bit saying it was normal to stash huge sums of money in people's houses in Cyprus in those days..was laughable!
But I realise there is more to it..than the BBCs version....I actually have a friend who was working for Asil at the time, in the newspaper section, he has lost money, but he still says Asil was set up......
It is very complicated and there is much more to it than that bbc program!
Unfortunatley they just made him out to be a lovable rogue..who helped himself! A sterotypical crooked mediterranean businessman!
who knows........the bbc had be believing he was guilty..although intellectual side..had alarm bells ringing..saying...there is more to it than this!
Very interesting...in the real world he is guilty! In our world it is questionable...

Of course the BBC was prejudiced - it always is about N. Cyprus, it follows the UK Gvt. line. It makes one wonder about BBC News about other places.
As far as the large quantities of cash are concerned, however, that is not quite so unbelievable as it seems. It is quite amazing how this country has changed in less than l0 years. Back in the l990s Northern Cyprus was very much a cash economy. There were few banks, no credit cards, no cash machines and very little crime and people used cash for all but very large transactions. It was difficult and time consuming to get money transferred from the UK. The pound sterling was strong, the Turkish lira was weak and people were so keen to get their hands on strong currency that you could get an extremely good rate of exchange for cash, and even unsupported sterling personal cheques perfectly legally. Once the logistics of carrying and storing so much money were solved (and Mr. Nadir was presumably in a position to do so) it would have saved a lot in bank charges and unfavourable exchange rates to bring and keep sterling cash .
