Girne temporary dog shelter - update as of 11.45 am Jan 26th

During the last week there have been discussions taking place between Girne Belediyesi and KAR about the Girne temporary shelter for dogs and the dogs care.
This morning a meeting took place , at the "shelter", with Margaret Ray and Naile Soyel (Girne Belediyesi). Future meetings and discussions will be ongoing.
KAR are pleased to have been asked for their advise on the existing and forward planning of the temporary shelter and advised the Belediyesi on kennelling, feeding, group dynamics, general shelter and other aspects of the dogs care and well being. KAR have asked the Belediyesi not to collect and house any more dogs there (currently there are 9) until improvements are made to the shelter.
It is hoped that the immense experience that KAR has will be of benefit to the Belediyesi and ultimately the dogs that are/will be under the care of the Belediyesi.
Future improvements and the running of the shelter will be monitored by all of the relevant parties and it is hoped that KAR will continue to be involved in an advisory capacity.

I am so pleased that you are being allowed to be ''on board'' on this.
The dogs look so unhappy and subdued in the pictures, it is very sad to see but what else can be done!
I don't suppose anyone knows what has happened to Café George dog, Bono?
He was not around at the week-end but other new dogs were.
Keep on going KAR, doing your best for the poor souls. They must be wondering what has hit them!

Good News. At least they look healthy with decent coats to cope with this weather. BB you should know better! All dogs can look pathetic when they are bored and want attention. I have three who will persuade anyone they will listen that they are neglected, unloved and starving hungry - half an hour after a good healthy meal. And I have the grocery and vets bills to prove otherwise!

I am relieved to see these are larger dogs, and not small ones who might be bullied by the others or delicate pedigree crosses with coats that would not stand the weather. Although there does look to be a strain of lab. which is such a pity as they are particularly gentle dogs.

Excuse me Ragged Robin but I do know better.
The picture that shows two larger dogs is not of dogs ''putting it on'' but of dogs seriously depressed and rightly so after they have been taken away from their ''home'' and ''family'' , in other words all what they have none. The way they were taken from the streets and put in to this far from ideal place and I would think with not the most gentle of handling, would make any animal upset, nervous and indeed terrified.
I am sure you cannot condone the way these poor dogs have been treated and for me the only saviour to this sorry state is that KAR is able to advise the Belediyesi and therefore hopefully help the dogs.
Should know better indeed!
I think it is a Goodnight from me and all of mine to you and yours.

BBB's other half.

BBB Sorry, that was meant partly as a joke obviously not a good one, but you of all people must realise that dogs can "put it on". Unfortunately it is not possible for me to see for myself, and I can only go by what I read and pictures. I was really just relieved to see that the dogs appeared in the picture to be in better physical condition than I had expected and the two dogs by the feeding post looked as if they were waiting for it to provide food.

I do not like to see any dog including my own (or indeed any animal, but dogs especially need to run and play) enclosed, but I also dont like to see dogs living among traffic and in daily danger of an accident - indeed if everything I did not like to see were removed the World would be a very difficult place.

Steady RR and BBB's other half. All opinions are expressed here, even those we personally disagree with. Street dogs are a fact of life in a number of Mediterranean countries. Personally, I can live with them or not. However, expat evangelists/missionaries wishing to impose their views on the indigent population will not resolve this issue. If the Cypriots are content with street dogs, why should expats interfere?
