I intend to bring with me from the UK a valuable rug that's 10 years old. Do you know if I'll have to pay import duty at Ercan please?

You should be fine with the used rug. I think that they are far more interested in large electrical items such as a television. A few years back, I brought back a very large canvas print and was stopped. Customs waved me through when they found out it wasn't a tv.

When we shipped our goods in 2013, the only item we paid tax on was a stereo system and If memory serves me right it was not expensive at all.

My understanding is that imported TV's have a charge regardless of if they are new or not, which is actually the equivalent of a sales tax on TV's here in the North and that allegedly goes to fund the state TV service (BRT) - kind of like a TV licence fee but only payable when you buy a new TV (or bring one in from another country). Other personal affects that you bring with you if you move out to be resident here are not liable for tax if they are used items and are if they are new items, but how they decide and how efficiently they check such things is not obvious.
