Residency over 60

Due to the early onset of dementia!! we have forgotten what we need to do to apply for residency now. As we are both over 60 do we still need to go to the police station first or can we go straight to the immigration office and can we still apply one month before expiry date?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Briefly no need for police station
straight to lefkosia clutching requisite docs. And they take credit cards.
If you have forgottenwhat they are then ask again
And you can get 2 years
But of course if you have dimentia you will need to make a note of the renewal date and another note to tell you where the original note is and ensure you have a note as to where that info is.
Life gets complicated.

Though the need for residency is debatable, we are going ahead with our renewal, the question is do we have to wait until the day it expires or can we renew, say one month beforehand ?

You don't have to wait until due dat.e They will merely date it for the appropriate date. We were late this year (due to non arrival of husband's new passport0 and in our case it was backdated.

Speaking personally I think you are wise to go ahead. I think it shows a commitment to the place as well - but that is just my own opinion!

Would suggest yu don't go on a Monday! Gets crowded.

Advised by whom? It is a very debateable subject and is more of a gentlemens agreement which at anytime may not apply.

My advice would be to think carefully before deciding.

carlee, you can keep on saying the same thing, and not take the slightest bit of notice of what we tell you, but the fact remains that when you made this self same point a few days ago, you did receive a comprehensive explanation, and were advised (if memory serves me right) to seek official confirmation in writing. Also, to look at the reams of info that has been written on this forum on that very subject!

Firstly if you review the subject of residency on this forum you will find a lot of differing thoughts as to this subject. There are also many references, written by those under and over 60 about the so called "gentlemans agreement" whereby people are being told that a visa extension to stay in excess of 90 days (For that is what it is, not temp residency) is not required if you are over 60. The BRS WEBSITE has much useful information on the subject. It states that the concession for the over 60s is not legally binding and may be cancelled. However the BRS site also states that if you are a BRS member you can go on the website and obtain a copy of a fax that was issued to the immigration staff to confirm the over 60s arrangement. Its all a bit confusing tho.

There are also other areas to consider with regards to driving in the TRNC when you have stayed in excess of 90 days. The requirement to have a TRNC driving licence. this then brings into consideration whether your car insurance is then valid as you do not hold a TRNC licence. Finally some people, those under 60, have crossed the border and come back the same day and been refused another 90 day visa.

So in summary, there are those both under and over 60 who are more than happy to cross the border and hopefully get another 90 day stamp. The over 60s concession to allow them to come and go without residency requirements is the subject of much confusion. It is not enshrined in law. We are all aware how things can quickly change or be misinterpreted in the TRNC.

Therefore, each to their own. You will find split opinions on this forum on the subject, with many over 60s continuing to go thro the extended visa ( temp residency) process as they feel more comfortable with this. When you work out the cost it really only comes out at around a bottle of beer per day - for us and many it is a small price to pay for peace of mind, no worries and hassle. Others have an alternative view and all I and many others say is think carefully.

I would hazard a guess Posh is basing his statement upon the numerous examples of various TRNC Governments' u-turns on expat issues: citizenship, legal property protection, kocans et al. The BRS had a meeting with the Minister late last month and issued a press release relating to this point. However, confusion still reigns.

Not sure if you know what the press release issued by the BRS stated, but if you do and it does mention residency and the over 60s and its public knowledge, would it be possible to post brief details on this thread. Plus of course more detail on why confusion still reigns?

It may help everyone try and understand, or not, this often discussed subject.

Apparently there is information that was sent to immigration officials concerning the temp residency concession for the over 60s but this can only be viewed or obtained if a BRS member. Not sure on the reasoning because after all it is an arrangement that affects ALL over 60s whether members or not. However, that is really is another discussion.

For all those who believe in a "Gentlemen's" agreement - Which "Gentlemen" was it that signed a bit of paper that one of them proudly waved over his head, proclaiming "Peace in our Times"?

Shortly thereafter Great Britain and Germany were at war!!!!!

I have learnt in the last couple of weeks that people are "Fickle" and that honor and integrity are passing fancies to be displayed when thought an advantage can be gained, but otherwise to be ignored. Trust a "Gentlemen's" agreement by all means but do not complain when it vanishes!!

There are many things in life that are not problematical until the sh1t hits the fan.... It's a risk you are prepared to take - that's fine for you. However, if you should ever find your status tested in court it may be a different matter - particularly if it involves a TC, if only because the other party's legal representative could argue that as you have over-stayed your strictly legal period here, you should not be in the country and therefore any fault lies with you... how will the judge accept this argument? Who knows? But Sod's Law being what it is - you can bet your boots that the other party will be related to the police and the judge...

People drive without a licence without insurance and without road tax or MOT and they save money, OK no Government Minister has said they can be excused but still nothing about renewal not being required is law either.

If the TRNC Government are honest in this why don't they enact a law to make it so - if and until they do I'm going to advise extreme caution to anyone who asks as I don't want them coming to me asking for help when it all goes pear-shaped.

Totally agree with what Groucho says. We were told exactly the same by our insurers & a senior immigration officer. They both said for peace of mind, renew or risk the consequences in case of accident etc. for what it costs(around 6TL/ week) then we would rather be safe than sorry. If there is no written law by October,we will renew ours again.

Groucho ..........agree with your posting and this was exactly the way things were explained to us and why we made the decision to obtain the extended visa/temp residency status. Yes we are under 60, but fast approaching this milestone and others have said if there is no written law when we reach 60 we will continue to renew. The cost is small relative to the peace of mind it brings.
