An excellent article that give s different perspective to the mid-east crisis. You will need to give up half an hour to read it, but it is, in my opinion, time well spent.

With all the CIA dabbling in the Middle East as evidenced by Erol's link one has to wonder if the Greek claims that the CIA was behind the Cyprus Problem have an element of truth in them, it's always been said that they were behind the anti communist Junta in Athens.

Barney you may just be right! Not discussed much sadly but outside 'influence' it most definitely was. Keep digging. CIA recently had to release files on just this matter thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. The usual culprits are involved.

LizA, Cypriots are frequently accused of blaming outsiders for their problems. There is some truth in what they say, after all George Ball, US Secretary of State, said in 1964 that the plan for Cyprus was partition.

George Ball, US Secretary of State, said in 1964 that the plan for Cyprus was partition.
Do you have a link for this please?

This is a claim made by Martin Packard.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4632080.stm
He recalls being asked to take a visiting US politician, acting secretary of state George Ball, around the island. Arriving back in Nicosia, says Martin, "Ball patted me on the back, as though I were sadly deluded and he said: That was a fantastic show son, but you've got it all wrong, hasn't anyone told you that our plan here is for partition?"
The official US plan at that time was the "Acheson Plan"
http://web.archive.org/web/201211102043 ... -%203.html
The Acheson plan
In the margins of the UN mediation in Geneva, Dean Acheson, the former Secretary of State, attempted to settle the problem by a political deal between Greece and Turkey. This would give Cyprus the choice of independence or union with Greece, in exchange for a sovereign Turkish base on the eastern panhandle of the Karpas peninsula and the cession to Turkey of the Greek island of Kastellorizon, which is just off the coast of Turkey. The Turkish Cypriots would have two or three areas in which they would have local self-administration and a resident international commissioner would look into complaints of discrimination. The plan was initially accepted in principle by both Greece and Turkey, but finally rejected by George Papandreou as 'partition masquerading in the rhetoric of enosis' because of the total opposition of Makarios. The Turks then rejected a revised version which sought to meet Greece's willingness to see a base leased to Turkey in Cyprus but not ceded.
