Tipping in North Cyprus

What's happened to tipping in restaurants?

Around the world it ranges from 5 - 20%.

From recent experience the good people of North Cyprus seem to have got the process of not tipping down to an art form.

Come on people - if you've received terrible service then no tip. Otherwise 10% has to be the norm.

I've seen people at the end of a good night (set menu, one free drink and entertainment thrown in) get a bill of 52 Lira and give 55 Lira and wait for change. I think we are preying on the good manners/nature of the proprietors. If it was done in the UK/US you would be chased down the street!

Play fair by the hard working staff and give a couple of quid.

If people have been in the trade they always tip very well. When I had the restaurant every tip went to staff, they were good staff and would go extra mile for customers. If I went to a restaurant and had rude, sourly staff I would not tip, but as I only use two or three restaurants they get good tips from me. Some owners of places do not give the whole tip box to staff but keep a third I hear for "breakages".

We always tip well, particularly if the meal is good. I have to say though, on several occasions we have dined with friends, we have been embarrassed to see how little they tip. So much so that it would probably be better if they gave nothing, as what they offered was an insult. We always make up the extra ourselves. Eating out here is cheap enough so come on, give a thought for the staff and their meagre salaries. If the meal and service were good, then so should your tip be.

Having a good friend who is a TC, he always tell us that 5% is good enough for good service in the TRNC.

I don't know but generally I round it up so it is about 10% however if I receive poor service, then no tip and we do not go back anyway.

I have heard and have been in company of expats that live in N. Cyprus who do not tip because they live there and think that because they patronise the place all year that is good enough....No it isn't, to leave a tip is good manners. A lot of expats even expect to be treated like royalty. I know some of the Indian eateries do not pass tips on, that too is wrong, if a waiter gives good service he/she should be rewarded, after all it is the waiter that is more often front of house and is the reason we go back.

We always tip well if we have good service, like other posters I am amazed by some people who seem to think that 3-5 Tl tip is good enough for an evenings service.

We always tip for good service and food. Him indoors tips when all he has had is a cup of rank coffee and that annoy me no end!! Have watched locals and they appear to rarely tip anything, lord know how they would cope in US, it has reached stupid heights as far as I'm concerned.

I leave a tip no matter which country I am in, it is good manners and we all know waiters are mostly poorly paid as bosses tend to make them rely on tips.

Tips are not a right they need to be earned. I tip when the service is good if exceptional I will tip a little more. I hate waiting staff being subservient, civility without servility. The quality of the food does not have to be brilliant and if I complain it needs to be handled correctly.

Generally if the food is not good or the service I don't go back.

To name some:-

Niazi in Girne. Pointed out an error in the bill in their favour, no thank-you or apology nothing. (However I drive to Lefkosa to go to Mirage)

Biblieoteque (sp) Staff standing smoking behind the counter, turned around walked out.

Just Italian Nicosia. Average food and rude service, may have been something to do with TC registered car.
