Girne Temporary Dog Shelter - update

Today our Community Warden visited the Girne Temporary Shelter for dogs . Girne Beledye have made some improvements and while they are not ideal they are trying . They have split the shelter into 4 compounds , concrete the base of the fence to stop dig outs , improved the fencing , put up some shading , made metal frames for more shading . They have been liaising with KAR throughout ( although many people do not realise this ) and are having problems balancing the rights of the residents and the rights of the dogs . They have assured us that this shelter will only be used for dogs that have been classed as potentially dangerous or aggressive and that a Belediyesi worker will visit the site twice daily to water and feed any dogs there and also that improvements will continue to be made. There is , contrary to rumour , only 1 dog at this shelter and it is a dog KAR have been aware of for a while . It has reportedly bitten people on more than 1 occasion . This is a difficult situation politically, emotionally and morally for all concerned . But the Beledeyesi worry if they do not remove the aggressive or dangerous dogs from the streets WHAT will happen to them ? KAR do feel that with continous liaison and monitoring the Belediyesi will hopefully improve their shelters so that concerns will finally be allay ed . They assure us that this is a TEMPORARY Shelter and will not be used once the permanent one at Karaman/Karmi is up and running . An update on the Karmi shelter will be posted soon .
