Just spoken to Intergaz to order a gas delivery and they have asked me to show the driver our gas tank permit.

They will not make the delivery unless I produce the permit which fortunately I have but other may not have one.

Seems the government are now taking a hard line.

Yes - this is a recently enforced regulation apparently, the govt. are trying to establish which properties/sites have/have not - got permits.
For those who are not aware, the permit has to be renewed each year, and this is usually done around december/january.
So make sure yours is up to date, or you will be charged a fine for each year it is outstanding.
For Girne, this done in the district office, just past the hospital.

I have had mine a couple of years now, but had a fine of 8 years 860tl, coz no one told us we needed it !!!!

Just to add-the fire department together with the police have to inspect and approve the position of the gas tank before issuing a permit.Mine was illegal and it cost me 2500 TL to get it moved to a safe position in the garden.

Someone in the government must need to upgrade their BMW

plus all plants and weeds must be removed from the area the tank is situated in.

We too rang for gas last week and were asked if we had our permit, we said no and were told that we needed the permit to get the gas, but we could get a temporary permit whilst we were waiting for the permanent permit.

The other half went off to start the permit process, he was in and out the department within 15 mins armed with a temporary permit. Gas delivered.

We now have to wait for the fire brigade to come and inspect our tank.

I note there was a letter in Saturdays Cyprus Today from a gentleman who had a visit from his local fire brigade who informed him that his boiler which was inside his house (for 10 years) now has to be situated outside, Jet gas came to visit and told him exactly where the boiler will placed.
He finished his letter with ' To all combi boiler owners out there, if you haven't had a visit yet, you will soon as both Jetgaz and Intergaz have supplied a list of all their customers to the fire brigade'

Ah Ah, now the penny has dropped. Another department will be formed consisting of totally unemployable members of family, who will be given a tape measure and instructions to measure the height and distance of weeds from tank. They in turn will have other members of family who will be recommended to "come and do your garden" in order to keep said weeds at bay. It all makes sense now!!

We moved in 7 years ago, knew nothing about needing a permit....but 18 months ago the process of clamping down must have started. We were advised we needed one. Had to take 5 copies of various documents down to the office by the Tapu. Also had to get a fire extinguisher of a specific size from a shop on industrial estate in Lefkosa. We don't have any issues with it to be honest, only that we didn't know. We were told it would take 3 weeks, it took about 3 months before we finally got the permit. It was 39tl for 2015, or thereabouts, so no fine was applied even though they could see from all the documentation how long we had it. A very nice young man, fireman, came to inspect, very pleasant, no problems. All legal and above board now. Got another one early January this year, which had gone up a little bit but not much. I believe you also need them if you store Oil on your property.

Surely this should fall to the installation company?

We have JetGas, and when ours was installed, it needed a long fill pipe as the truck hose is still 50m away even fully extended, the engineer, a very helpful and knowledgeable man oversaw the whole process.



Our Turkish neighbours bought the house next to us a couple of years ago, and inherited the gas tank permit from the previous owner.

However, because the house has changed hands, they have to re-apply for a new permit in their name, cannot simply transfer the existing one.

To make things worse for them, the rules have (unusual for Cyprus) changed, so whilst you can position a 500l tank on the boundary, not 3m into the property as thr 1,000l tanks must be, they now have to build a blast wall behind the tank.

Quite rightly however, they also have been told they must seal the drain cover that is only about 1.5m away to prevent any spillage running into and gas vapour building up in the pipes.

I'm inclined to think the tightening of the rules and enforcement of something for a change is a step in the right direction.

brian24001, I would agree a step in the right direction.....but not many see it like that.....damned if you do, damned if you don't over here. So many people are so critical of anything that actually may have a point....

Mrs gee,could you clarify what 5 pieces of documentation needed for permit application?

Does anyone have the boiler fitted inside of the house ? ..

Art what was the reason for the position of the tank being illegal ?

Hi Jen, I can't remember exactly but you have to complete an application form which you get from the office by the Tapu office. On the form, it tells you what the documents are that you need. I know we had to have copies of our Kocan, copy of the site plan, and I think we had the original document from Jetgas for the tank. You have to get a fire extinguisher, and a receipt for it to show you got it.....then all of the documents had to be copied 5 times......even the guy in the office laughed about needing 5 copies......not sure what they do with them all....once you have gathered them all together take it back again to the office.

The gas tank was positioned close to a minor road -which one man and his dog use!

All of the original gas pipes were deemed as unsuitable so we had to completely replace the pipes-2500 TL .I spent at least 6 months trying to sort it out.

Not a happy bear.

Thanks Art. Don't think will have that problem. Who knows maybe they will think of something when they come to inspect.

Yes, Art, I believe that is the case, 3 meters from boundary wall. When the fireman came to inspect ours he measured and it was a little less than 3 meters which we thought was going to be a problem. Then he looked over the wall and could see on the other side was the neighbours' tank, so, he said, 'that's fine', because there would not be any building there....so I assume that if their tank had not been there, and there was a chance of building something close, we may have had to have it moved......phew!

1000l tanks 3m from boundary, 500l tanks can go on boundary, (as in our neighbours) but they did have to build the wall up to higher than the tank.
