I'm sure if you approached the BRS they would be happy to help. They are having a Blood Donor Day on 9th April.

I have just been through this looking for O positive blood and I don't envy you the task. BRS couldn't help me. If it is an emergency then the blood bank will accept any blood donation and swap it for O from their stocks - if they have any as O is not common here as in the UK.

In the end my doctor found 3 people working in Lefkosa who were prepared to sell me their blood - it cost me 900tl for 2 units of platelets and 1 of whole blood. If someone is prepared to pay I can try to get in touch with them for you in case they know anyone else prepared to sell - it is only 2 weeks since they gave for me and that is too soon to give again.

Yes, BRS have a blood donation day this Saturday at Lapta. 10am -1pm in the health clinic: follow the signpost to Sagli Merkezi behind the secondary school.

If YOU have 8 pints of blood in your body and could spare just one of them up to three times a year, and are in good health, then PLEASE join our list of potential blood donors - the people asked in cases like this if they could donate now. Send me a pm with your details and blood group if you know it. Or - at best- come along on Saturday.

Then this sort of thing - having to buy blood - need not happen.

Susan Turner, Wife of Bowman,
volunteer blood donor team member, BRS

I am O positive, but am too old to give to BRS or any other blood donor association. If anyone is desperate and doesn't mind old blood, I'm quite willing to give them some.

Point of information: in this country the upper age limit is currently 68 years set by the government: for platelet donation it is 50.
So quite a few people in our community are overage, but aware of the need - so what you do is tell your young friends!

Incidentally, my platelets had to be from a male O+ donor under 50 (as Bowman says).

My wife and I donated this morning. O + blood. Drove to state hospital on outskirts of Lefkosia. As you turn in to hospitaland after about 100yds on the right is the Thallasaemia/Blood donation building. Parked up and walked in. Usual screening forms on table in english and turkish. Completed form. Handed across to nurse. Straight in, blood pressure checked, iron level checked and then in the chair and blood was taken. We explained who the blood was for and they were aware of the name and said after screening blood would be transfered across forthe recipient. After donation made we were given a cold fruit juice whilst we sat for a further 15mins.

From the time we walked into the building to walking out it took 40mins. Very efficient and pleasant experience!

So if anyone can help please call the number given and donate.

Your right JBA the rules are quite strict, and the dice certainly are not loaded against ex-pats - this is for everyone. There are other obvious restrictions like content of haemoglobin, blood pressure and condition of donor and not on certain medications like blood-thinners.

BUT it is a quick, safe, painless and not unpleasant procedure. You will always be tested first which is a cunning way of keeping track of your readings free of charge - just half-an-hour of your time.

Platelets are not so simple. They are extracted from your blood and the blood is returned to you - a process which (for 1 unit) takes 2 hours connected to the machine. A healthy adult can donate 6 units in one session without any ill effects (according to the Mayo Clinic) - although the blood bank may not permit that level of donation.

Platelets are destroyed by refridgeration. They must be kept at room temperature and last no more than 4 days before they must be used.
