Can anybody tell me if it is cheaper to get eyes tested and new glasses in the North or South?

No idea to be honest, but you would have to factor in the cost of insurance to go over the border and the cost of the petrol of course. Always get ours from Akay in Girne.

Having recently had several lots of new lenses plus new frames, I don't consider the cost of glasses here to be excessive - mine were also done by Akay. I use Hussain Sezgin for eye tests as he is very good indeed and very thorough. He charges 80 TL for the test.

Eye test in the South is free and spectacles fitted properly, important if you a difficult prescription!

I had a free eye test there recently and very happy with the spectacles from them.

We both have varifocals, and have used Akay for the past 10 years or so.....no problems at all.

We reckon the north is cheaper as we have had specs from both side.s Also the cost of getting them is cheaper, plus of course if any follow up, further tests etc, well the north is on our doorstep- in fact it IS our doorstep. To us there is no competition.
Each to their own of course, but as I say, for us there is no hesitation in getting them here.

Marions, Where do you go for the eye test please?
Offshoredi, Did you find out where Hussain Sezgin is located?
Happy to use Akay for dispensing but need an updated eye test first preferably here in the North.
Thankyou .

We always go to the eye clinic in the road at the back of Pia Bella. It is on the corner of the road that goes down the side of Pia Bella. Very thorough job.

I agree with mrsgee - Cyprus Eye Clinic are very thorough.
It is also worth mentioning that Akay are perfectly happy to put new lenses into existing frames which can make things much cheaper.

Directions to Hussain Sezgin: from Lapta into Girne on the old road, straight across the first roundabout (the one near HSBC) and take the next left - Gepaz Builders Merchants on your right as you turn. Dr Hussain's consulting rooms are on your left just past Smile Dentist. Am trying to find his damned phone number but will post it when I find it!

Also from my side many thanks for all this excellent information, I need new glasses too. KIBKOM very often is a real ""Treasure Box", even for somebody living here for a long time!

Absolutely agree with you trueblue. Kibkom is full of helpful members ready to share their knowledge & experiences.
It's like an extended family.
Thankyou Agoboard, excellent directions. It's good to have a choice in case one or the other may be heavily booked in advance.
Thankyou to Keithcaley also who always goes out of his way to help whatever the query.

Pars, the owner and optician at AA Optical is one of the nicest guys you could meet. Happy to help with any problems at all and cares not at all which side of the Line you live on. Eye tests are free and he is happy to just provide new lenses for your existing frames or any new frames you buy on the North side of the Line. He has even re-fitted my new spectacles that I purchased from the North side for me so that I can see through them properly.
You only have one set of eye's, the cost of keeping them in good condition is not a matter for debate! However for your information, I have found that the cost of lenses in the South is slightly higher than in the North with the frames in the North being slightly less expensive than those in the South. AA Optical is a 5 minute walk down Ledra Street so you don't need to pay for vehicle insurance, as the test is free you don't have to spend up to 100TL on an eye test in a private hospital. Personally I suffer from monocular vision and need varifocal lenses as well. To put it simply, for the last 65 years of my life I have worn spectacles and visited opticians all over the world, apart from one visit in Germany AA Optical have been the best I have found to date.
I recommend them without reservation.
