Road Side Adverts

We have just travelled back to Girne from Lefkosa and for at least the firsr 5kms all the advertising hoardings had been stripped and the electronic ones covered. It looks like the government is serious this time - probably because the new law was prompted by the new Road Safety organisation.

As it was explained to me:-

- no adverts nearer than 15 metres of the road

- hoardings only permitted in certain areas and then only with planning permission from local belediye

- all existing ads to be authorised or removed within 3 months (don't know when the 3 months starts)

If they haven't already done so I hope they tackle the roundabout at the end of the dual carriage way I Alsancak. They've been going up like a rash and its a nice little earner for the guy that owns the company who installs them, both hardware and software.

The huge one at Starling in Alsancak is so dangerous, at night it dazzles you because the road lighting is so poor in contrast.

You're right about that - they have toned down the one advertising the Merit Royal - that one was lethal!

...and I agree with Sophie about the 'TV Screen' ones at the end of the dual carriageway - who needs to have their attention distracted when approaching a roundabout? - It's madness!

Let's hope they take down the whole framework and not leave it to become a rusted eyesore

The moving light show at the Malpas hotel sign in Catalkoy displays the status of casino which I believe to be illegal - no doubt they think they have been really clever because at no point does the whole word appear in the garish lighting display.

We also noticed that the adverts had been ripped off and left on the ground under the hoardings. It will take one windy day before they blow across a windscreen and cause an accident.
As usual half a job done, litter left behind and rusty hoardings still standing.

Drove to Lefkosa to day and I would say that at least 80% of those huge hoardings have been removed from both sides of the road. Of course the large metal skeleton thingies are still there, but you never know, they might go eventually. .
