Does anybody know if there any courses in North Cyprus. Just got bikes for the whole family and I wanted to get some knowledge and education on how to ride a bike safely. I know in the UK we had the cycling proficiency when we were kids but I am not sure if they have anything like that out here.

No idea but they definitely need them!

Cyclists seem to think cycling towards the oncoming traffic is the norm here.... accidents not waiting to happen - already happening...

....to say nothing of the cars (and lorries) that insist on overtaking oncoming traffic right into your path when you're on the correct side of the road!

Is there such a thing as safe driving / cycling over here. Standards are dreadful. Lack of police action against the idiots who think it's o.k to park on double yellows and pedestrian crossings, use of mobile phones, children floating about in the cars, going the wrong way down a one way system etc, etc, etc,

They've, asked a simple question, why does everything turn in to a reason to put "locals" down whether its driving the police, animals welfare, the govt….
Come on if you can't give the info they need don't make negative comments, they obviously are aware of the dangers of the roads that is why they are asking for alternatives.

There is an email, might be worth contacting these people to see if they can point you somewhere or you might want to join them if suitable. Not sure if the link I also put up might not be suitable but maybe worth asking the people who arrange can also help point you somewhere for advice.

I do agree that it is generally quite unnecessary to make pejorative and negative comments in response to a simple request, but I have to say that my standard response to any question about cycling or motorcycling on TRNC roads is "DON'T!".

The death toll and attrition rate is absolutely appalling, and I would never forgive myself if I allowed someone - or their loved ones - to go out on these roads without fair warning, and they were killed as a consequence.

Even pedestrians are not safe - just read the local papers every single week, and you will see what I mean.

Do not go out on the roads in TRNC, or allow your family to do so, without a steel cage and safety belts to protect them.

'Off Road' might be a different matter, although obviously you would need to be aware of the risks involved there.

On the roads, it's not YOUR road skills that you need to worry about - it's the maniacs in cars, taxis, lorries, & buses.

Take those bikes and smash them up!

It will have cost you less than a funeral.

I'm not slagging anyone, just trying to save you the heartbreak of the preventable death of a loved one.

Until people here learn to drive safely, with care and respect for others, and the Police actively pursue offenders, then the death toll will continue to rise.

Don't be a statistic!

Not aware of anything like that here. A suggestion is to visit the old airfield Catalkoy. (now basically a long length of road, a bit rough but ok to cycle on safely) then check out some of the mountain walks, some of them are ideal for cycling on if you choose the more gentle slopes. Only problem is transporting your bikes there but well worth the effort.

My son cycles to school and is fine. I will be getting a bike soon. I am a qualified secondary school teacher. I would be happy to work alongside anyone who would like to set up a cycling proficiency day/so for the children who live here.
I don't think it would be too much to organise. I propose the road down from Bellapais to the ESK school and surrounding roads.

Is anyone interested? We have to start somewhere!
