One of my French Windows is difficult to open and close as it seems to be binding on the frame. Any tips or recommendations to ease the slider, or the contact details of someone who can, would be greatly appreciated.

As you appear to be talking about 'sliding' rather than 'French' windows, it sounds as though one or more of the rollers has worn.

There's an Aluminium door and window chap on the left hand side heading into Girne from your direction, before you get to the Karakum Lemar - he should be able to fix it.

As Kieth says the Plastic wheels have probably worn or stuck, dependent were you live there is also a very good guy in Lapta Village . On the edge of the Car park opposite the small Starling Supermarket. Also maybe Aluminium Ali, Near the DVD shop at Alsancak.

There should be an adjustment on the rollers. Located through a hole on the bottom edge of door at either end. It will either be allun or star key. Be very surprised if they are Plastic rollers on doors, should be metal. Need to take the weight of door to adjust. Saying that,it could also be worn rollers.

This happens with ours also.apply some VASELINE to the runners and move the door back and forward until the rollers get lubricated.

Just make sure that there's no sand in it.

Clean tracks, silicon spray!

Thank you to all of you who have taken the time to respond - the forum is very useful for things like this.

I have tried silicon spray to no effect and will examine the other suggestions, so please keep them coming.

The door rollers should look something like these I had the same problem the aluminium casing cracked around the roller easy to replace once door is off. The doors are very heavy when removed so be very careful if these two rollers will solve your problem you can have them I'm based in Bellapias they have to be exactly the same to work though.

Sorry don't know why I said Plastic, having a blonde moment. But just had had a glance in my diary and the guy from Lapta charged just 100 TL to come out and remove door and supply and fit. In fact we have 2 more doors gone now , as some one says simple job but doors very heavy with double glazed units.

The people who made mine used the same plastic roller assemblies as on the windows- I've had to replace the most used ones 3 times in 10 years

On the side of the opening door, at the opposite side to the opening, you will normally find attached a metal strip, slightly longer (i.e. 'higher') than the height of the door. This is intended to prevent the door being 'jacked up' and lifted off its tracks by thieves trying to gain entry. This strip must be removed first - normally it will be held on by a couple of screws that are only accessible when the two doors have been opened, and have passed each other.

Normally (on the doors that I have seen, at any rate) Allen or Hex headed screws are use to hold the frame together, & to fix and adjust the roller assemblies - the adjustment provides for varying the 'lift' at each end of the door, so that it looks level when alongside the other door. With a long enough shaft on the adjustment tool, this adjustment can be done 'by eye' with the door in-situ - otherwise it is 'trial and error'... by lifting the door off, adjusting and re-positioning

Before you start, lay a large car blanket on the floor to prevent scratching the handle or frame once it has been removed if you don't have a suitable rug in the vicinity.

Best to have at least one able-bodied assistant to help take the weight of the door during operations, as accidentally dropping it could make you wish that you'd 'got a man in'

Thanks to all who responded.

I was advised by Big Bad Bob to try Blue Island (doors,windows, etc). They came up and replaced the 2 faulty plastic rollers on both the sliding doors with steel rollers - labour and parts for 100 TL. That is amazing value, as I reckon each of the rollers would cost at least £10 in B & Q in the UK.

The location of their shop, should you have a similar problem, is: head out of Catalkoy, away from Girne - just before the Malpas turn off on the right is a parade of a dozen or so shops, and Blue Island is the first one.
