Famagusta Football Team MTG (Magusa Turk Gocu) won the North Cyprus football championship (KPet Super Lig) on the last day of the season.
They defeated Yenibogazici 2-1 away in a thrilling encounter. In the first half it looked like it wasn't going to be there day as chance after chance was put over the bar or wide, but shortly after time they scored two goals in quick succession, and despite conceding on held on for the win.

Fellow title chasers GAU Cetinkaya who lead the league until today lost 2-1 at Cetinkaya, so MTG won the title by a single point.

Its a Famagusta double as MTG's rivals Dumplupinar won the League 1 title and promotion to the top league for next season.

Good to see the contest go to the wire. Its a shame more expats don't watch the local football, its far more fun than sitting in a bar watching the Premier League!

I certainly endorse what Moonage Daydream says, you cannot beat watching local live football, the standard and passion will surprise a lot of people. A group of us Ex-Pats follow Esentepe home and away, and we were present to see Dumlupinar receiving the League 1 trophy, pity they beat us 6-3 but it was a very entertaining match.
Watching local football gets you out and about, you visit and see places you don't normally see, and meet people from the Football Clubs who are always warm and welcoming. After the match their always the congratulatory beer or you can simply drown your sorrows.
