Are dogs illegal on the beaches in the TRNC

Over the years I have lived here I have noticed the steadily increasing numbers of ex pats walking their dogs on the beach that lies below my villa. They come in their cars from God know where, often with two or more dogs, not a poop scoop in sight and walk their dogs on the beach. They will often throw plastic bottle into the sea for the dog to retrieve, if the dog fails to do this the bottle is left to get stuck in some poor turtles gullet! I have no problem with people walking their dogs as long as they are kept under control and they clean up after them but please not on the beach.

So if they clean up you are happy for them to use the beach?? Doesnt sound like it, so why the objection if they walk on the beach?

Quite agree with you that it is unacceptable for dog owners to let their dogs foul and not pick it up! Think, this applies to anywhere not just the beach, but why spoil a beautiful environment by leaving dog poop and litter behind?

Well, I walk my dog down to the beach every morning, and I can guarantee that there us a lot less waste (including poo) on the beach and approach roads when I leave than when I arrive - it's just good manners...

Mind you, the dog does follow me around with some nappy bags

My daughter lives on a beautiful island off Hong Kong. There is a bay with clean clear water and golden sand, which is swept and cleared of rubbish, if any, every day. Dogs are not allowed and there are vigilant lifeguards who make sure the laws are obeyed, anyone breaching the law is given a hefty fine.

A bit further along, the sea is equally clean, the sand just as golden, and dogs are allowed with notices asking politely, please clean up after your dog, which the majority of people do and the people who do not want 'the company of dogs' do not go there. They have a choice.

Here, there are no such facilities, and as far as I know, no fines, so until there are, I think dogs should be banned from beaches.

I have nothing against dogs, just the irresponsible owners, who, I have seen, covering up the doggy deposits with sand, for an unsuspecting child to dig up later. Nice

BLUE BUTTERFLY,

I'm with you 100% regarding irresponsible dog owners.

I only go to the beach with the dog at 6am, so that there are no people around to annoy, and always make sure that 'we' haven't left anything behind

I would be all for banning those irresponsible 'child-owners' too - the ones that bury their kids' dirty nappies for my dog to dig up - Urgh...

But I don't think that you can ban all dogs and owners just because there are a few irresponsible ones - it would be like banning cars from the road simply because there are some irresponsible car owners, or banning the sale of drinks in cans and bottles because some people leave 'em laying around as litter.

You shouldn't punish the majority, like a class of schoolkids, just because some mis-behave.

I think you can only take dogs on beaches between 1 October - 30 April but this might be hearsay!
There is absolutely no comparison between TRNC & Hong Kong which despite its millions of inhabitants plus great number of dogs is spotlessly clean everywhere.
They hose all the streets & pavements at least once a week & there is a constant army of workers tending to the public garden areas. You never see a dirty car as they get their staff to wash them every day.
However there is a lot of money there so they can afford to employ people to do these things.

As I understand it , dogs are not allowed on beaches at any time of year - but unfortunately the strays can't read!

Up to now common sense has prevailed and the rule waived in winter when few people use the beach for swimming and sunbathing. Unfortunately at those times most beaches are so filthy that any caring dog owner has enough to do making sure the pet doesnt cut its paws on broken glass or rusty tins - or worse!

Bournemouth has the right answer - dogs are only allowed at certain hours in the mornings and evenings- and fines for fouling go towards providing bins so elderly and handicpapped owners can still enjoy walking their dogs without the problem of where to put doggy dirt bags when their hands are full of walking sticks and leads.

But, again, there is a lot of money there!

ozankoys / Rambling Rose,

Despite intensive 'Googling' , I haven't been able to find anything to support your suggestion about dogs not being allowed on beaches.

I did once see a plea for dog owners to keep their pets on leads during Turtle hatching, but nothing else.

Does anyone have any hard facts on this? - e.g. Details of actual laws / byelaws, and where they can be viewed?

Quite right Keith,if our dog fouls the beach or wherever, those of us that are considerate in collecting the waste should be allowed to exercise our dogs, those that dont collect shouldnt be allowed,as you say,its the owners responsibility, just like its the parents responsibility to collect the childs waste, not to bury it for possibly another child to dig up!!horrendous!

Keith : no I dont know of a firm law which is why I said "I understand" - it is what I was told years ago when I was adopted by my first dog, and it made sense, although in those days few people lived in walking distance of the sea let alone were able to monitor a beach from their own homes, and more beaches were accessible, rather than being blocked off by hotels, lidos etc.

I, too, would be interested in a definitive ruling - maybe it is the equivalent of a bylaw- perhaps someone who lives in a seaside village could check with the Muhtar?

True, if we banned everyone we disapproved of (picknickers who leave bottles and cans would be my choice) there would be few left on the beaches and we would be living in the nanny society that some of us left the UK to get away from.
