See that the offer from this side to help fight fires in the south has been refused. Israel and France helping. What hope is there here for resolution. Stop it now.

Agree. No chance of a solution if they cannot b accept a loving gesture in times of need

However, the offer may have been refused because there was a need for fire fighting aircraft and advanced fire-fighting equipment, which other countries were providing and the TRNC was unable to do.

Don't get me wrong; I am as critical of the GC approach to the 'Peace Talks' as anyone else, but lets not jump to conclusions.

I see your point, but to have unconditionally accepted the offer of help (whether it was needed or not) would have demonstrated their intent to find a friendly and harmonious solution. Rejecting the offer leaves the suspicion that they did so from fear of inadvertently appearing to 'recognise' the 'illegal' TRNC...

Asked by reporters about the offer of help from the north, Anastasiades said Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci had called him late on Sunday with the offer “given that it is our common country facing this problem”.

“I thanked him, of course, but realised that with the help from Israel, the UK authorities, and particularly from Greece, and with other aircraft, we did not think there was a need for further contributions. But in any case I want to thank him for the genuine interest to confront together the problems facing our common country,” Anastasiades said.

I am no apologist for the GCs, but credit where it is due. They certainly seem to condemn us at every opportunity, but is that not the sentiment towards them in this thread?

It's called Experiential Learning

However, I hadn't seen Ana's statement at that point, and I suppose that they did accept our electricity when they accidentally blew up their Power Station...

But did they ever pay for it?

I seem to remember they also turned down the offer of water,..but perhaps Greece and Israel are providing that as well ..

There was an occasion, in fact, I think there were more than one, some years back before the border was opened when offers of help from the "other side" were accepted and the border thrown open to allow fire engines and volunteers through. A Turkish Cypriot I know who was a volunteer said it was a wonderful experience and he met Greeks he used to know "in the good old days" and enjoyed working with them again! The whole thing was hailed as a "confidence building measure".

It seems to whole process of negotiation and reintegration is a classic case of "one step forward and two steps backward"!!!!!

They have now accepted the offer of help from Akinci.

I'm not quite understanding this, is the offer from Turkey or NC as the last paragraph in this link seems to indicate something different.

The fires are still raging on the South so as long as someone helps it doesn't matter, up to now two firefighters have lost their lives. When I see people flipping cigarette ends out of the cars I wonder how long it will be before the fire is on this side of the island. I hope the fires are soon extinguished and all people involved are safe.

Sorry - I don't buy it.

The South has accepted Turkey's offer which is a very different thing from accepting Akinci's offer. Further, it's not planes and helicopters they need, its people. The South is appealing for volunteers to go and help the firefighters.

A short drive away the North has trained firefighters experienced in exactly this type of fire - and with engines and equipment for dealing with them. Yet their offer is refused in favour of appealing for volunteers.

Nothing has changed or will change.

I was wrong! After reading the articles in Cyprus Today, I realise that I was being naive in giving Anastasiades the benefit of the doubt.
