Erdogan says Turkey may hold a referendum

More fallout from the Brexit vote - Erdogan has suggested that Turkey may hold a referendum on whether Turks wish to continue with efforts to join the EU or abandon its application. If the "no"s won, not sure what effect, if any, this would have on the talks but, one thing for sure, it would render the power of the ROC's veto irrelevant and impotent.

I agree, that the ROC's right to veto (in the EU) would then be irrelevant as regards Turkey's accession to the EU, but it would still be relevant and just as potent in all other matters - such as recognition of TRNC...

And they would also retain a powerful veto in the UN, backed by many UN resolutions.

Not something to be very happy about

I think it would be right to hold a referendum. Let the people decide and not force it upon them.

There are many who have a negative view of Turkey for many reasons, letting the people decide is in a small way addressing this negativity.

Wonder what the people of the ROC really think about EU membership.

Turkey in the EU has never been on the cards. Not in my lifetime at least.
Certainly it has little consequence at the moment after BREXIT except that Turkey has a good and strong trade deal with the EU. A UK trade deal with Turkey must be on the agenda in order to secure trade that may simply go to other European suppliers. Turkey has a strong economy and Army and its support as an ally is important to the UK.

"Turkey has a good and strong trade deal with the EU."

So why can't the UK have the same ?

It doesn't at the moment. The EU does.
Rest assured EU businesses will be on trade missions to Turkey next week to secure new business that the UK has potentially lost because of BREXIT.
We have vacated the EU trade deal. Is that not clear?
If the UK can get a trade deal rather sharpish then certainly we can compete with the EU and recapture a level of trade.
